Shifter Knob Troubles

Hey Guys,

Looks like the my shifter knob is starting to peel. Any idea what's going on and what I can do about it? Thanks.

Get a new one.

It's like clearcoat failure on your paint...keep it maintained with regular care, or wait until it's too late and then complain about it.

It's too late. Sorry.

I actually like the stock shifter. I guess it's a matter of taste.

I had no idea they clear coated such things. What was I supposed to do to maintain it properly? Wax it? Sorry - bit of a noob when it comes to detailing.

That's not clearcoated. I was just comparing it to a common problem - clearcoat failure.

To maintain that (I assume it's leather) you need to apply a leather cleaner/conditioner every month or two to keep it in great condition.

If it's vinyl, apply 303 Aerospace Protectant to the shift knob.

I have some Meguiares for the leather part. What about the metal part where all the peeling is happening? If I get a new shifter knob I don't the same problem happening.
Thanks.

I don't see any metal parts. :gotme:

I just see the leather part on top where it's peeling.

The part that's peeling is metal. I think you may have been right about it being clearcoat failure. It might not be a bad idea to wax that part if the aftermarket one has that.

From that picture, the knob doesn't look like metal at all. I guess it could be clearcoated then. Still, I'm afraid you'll need to get a new one. Maybe someone at your local dealership will know what the cause was, and how to prevent it. If it's metal, you could try applying a sealant/wax to it (the new one).

Yeah the inner part is metal. When I first got the car I thought it was brushed aluminum but I guess not. Sucks to have to replace it. I'm going to be selling the car in the summer and the current shifter knob is going to detract from the "perceived" value of the car so it's gotta go.

Thanks for the replies.

mine got a huge cut in it after i tried to remove it.. I may go for the aftermarket one with matching ebrake handle
