157.7 HP...that's it??!!

I did a dyno run on thursday and my best was 157.7 hp, 181 torque. I have the usual mods, intake, exhaut, advanced timing, etc, but I don't know why I have such a low hp rating. My car is rated as 190/190 stock at the flywheel. Figure you lose 20% between the flywheel and wheels and you get 153hp at the wheels. With the mods I have, shouldn't I have higher hp/torque ratings? Also, Why would I have an almost 25 ft/lbs difference in torque when the hp and torque are rated at the same from the factory?

One last thing, I advanced my timing the same as Craig, (I think that's where I found my directions) and got 147 hp. I advanced it a little bit more for my second run and got 157 hp. So, you guys/gals who have VE's, this is proof that just by turning a couple bolts you can get more hp!

Are you auto or 5spd?

There must be a typo.

I'm a 5spd. And over 200 ft/lbs with cat-back and intake, impressed!

Can you tell us how much power/tq you have at 4000rpm, 4500rpm, 5500rpm, 6000rpm? Are your VTC's grounded too, if so that would cause a 12whp loss uptop.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble...but a 98auto with only a jwt intake and cat-back will not make 216.3tq at the wheels. Fully modded N/A manual 4th gens can barely break 200tq at the wheels.

Your 164.8hp sounds right..but your torque number is about 40ft/lbs too high.

216.3tq at the wheels equates to ~270tq at the crank (considering a 20% drivetrain loss). A stock 4th gen is rated at 205tq the crank. Do you really believe an intake and a cat-back gave you an extra 55tq????

yeha man i dont know when i post dyno u can see it i looked at it my self at the graph and at the print out numbers and it confirms it i guess a dyno sheet is worth more then words.....

Don't believe everything you see, my friend. :)

HP = (TQ x RPM)/5252. HP is a made up unit, it is a function of torque at a certain RPM. IF your car had 216ft lb to the wheels, lets say at 4500rpm (where the 4th gen torque peak is) a little simple algebra shows you would be putting down 185hp at just 4500rpms and it would continue to rise from there to a peak at about 5600rpm. But your peak HP # is 164hp. Sorry, but your printout is messed up or the dyno gave an incorrect reading (maybe a torque spike right at the beginning of the run, its very common). You don't have 216ft-lb at the wheels. No 4th gen does without spray or boost.

ok i hear that... im doing another dyno on friday so that will clear some of this up hopefully...

but who knows maybe my car is a freak of the torque world..

92vemax your numbers are VERY weak, something is definately wrong. Lordrandall put down 163hp STOCK and that is with a bad power valve I think.

How many miles on your engine?

Also sounds like your VTC's are gone.

92vemaxse Feb 19, 2003 09:24 AM

I have 121K on the engine, about 85K on the trans and VTC's are grounded.

So the only way to gain that 12hp back is to rebuild the VTC's or get new ones?

yup, or unground them and listen to them tick for the first 10 minutes of driving.

i got my dyno #s up ill have graph shortly,,,, i was wrong about the 216. trq it was because of the down shift because of my automagic..
