Full DEK swap Dyno before Cattman headers

Finally got around to dynoing the DEK motor and DEK manifold together. The old DE got swapped in early 2006 and this is the first time I've dynoed the new setup.

Mod list:

Apexi intake with 2000 midpipe
70mm Pathy TB with Krismax's IACV adaptor plate
Port matched 2K VI (Switch over at 4800 rpm)
5th gen lower with no swirl valves
Blehmco grounding kit
OEM flywheel & crank pulley
AE clutch & pressure plate
2.5" Warpspeed non mandrel Y-pipe wrapped in DEI header wrap
2.5" Resonated test pipe
2.5" LSS mandrel bent B-pipe with Magnoflow resonator
2.5" custom Remus muffler section
Amsoil engine & gear oil
17" MOMO arrow rims and 235/45/17 tires (50~55 pounds each !)
SMT-6 tune - 12.5~13.0 A/F and +10 timing

51.0 F , 29.90 in Hg , Humidity 19% (450 ft elevation)

I didn't do alot of tuning and did not play much with the A/F. Just wanted a baseline so next time I can test the Cattman headers that have been sitting around since the beginning of November. Only did 4 runs today and this was the best one.

SAE Corrected -

Uncorrected (gotta love this cold and dry weather for power) -

Compared to my best old dyno (that was done in 4th) -

Now I need to get off my lazy A$$ and swap those headers and go for another dyno tune. :D

Beautiful man :ben: Fantastic tq curve. Lighter wheels, headers = :ben: Interesting these #'s were achieved w/o them (headers).

Got some runfiles to go with that? :naughty:

Thanks, this is one reason I like the VQ30DEK. Nice linear HP delivery and almost flat TQ across the powerband with 80% of peak TQ available at all RPMs. Im more of a road course person so it's nice not to have a spastic powerband at the limits of cornering. :D

You know I do... :slap: Email ?

speed racer 12-02-2007 07:18 AM

damn that's beautiful. I would like the run files as well.

DandyMax 12-02-2007 02:56 PM

run files also please Joe. dvrditar @ hotmail . com

Nice curves, needs to be revved out farther though... ;)

I'd be curious to see where the peak is, given you have DEK intake/exhaust cams (I presume?) instead of DE intake...

Zack342 12-03-2007 10:52 AM

Nice joe...let mek now if you need a hand with the headers.

Kevlo911 12-07-2007 08:34 AM

Needs EU

michaelnyden 12-09-2007 02:12 PM

agreed, needs to be revved out further and a little more tuning...

DandyMax 12-09-2007 02:49 PM

Man I really need to get on a dyno once more before retiring the 3.0...

michaelnyden 12-09-2007 08:32 PM

yes you do!

maxima92se 12-09-2007 10:37 PM

hey wasup Joe. I was waiting for that call - lol. Anyway nice numbers man. Maybe next time i will tag along and get mine done as well.

Ghase 12-09-2007 11:35 PM

Nice numbers, it kinda reminds me of my all motor dyno back in the days. Though I only made 195whp with all bolts on including cattman headers, but I was leaning out at redline (14.1 a/f). And that was on my old auto tranny too...:p

Keep up the good work!!!

This was all done at the last minute. I called the guy Friday afternoon and the appointment was at 9:30 am Saturday morning. Also this was a quick session just to get a baseline with some tweaking here and there. Next time around Im gonna plan a little while ahead and will let you know.

Nealoc187 12-11-2007 03:45 PM

you, sir, need to rev that thing out to 7200 rpm. that'd be one fast 4th gen.

98SEBlackMax 12-17-2007 08:44 PM

Headers are in and the car is up and running. :D

No exhaust leaks and everything seems great so far.

Two things off the bat -

These do lean out the exhaust a bit, well on this car at least. I don't need a A/F gauge to tell. Usually the cold start exhaust odor on this car is noxious with an extreme amount of fuel in the exhaust (DEK injectors with DE fuel pressure reg). It's been this way for years now matter how many things I've messed with. Now there is very little fuel smell even on the cold start.

2nd the exhaust sound... SMOOOOTH... Gotta like this setup for it's sound. Not 100% of what I was expecting but a great improvement none the less.

Once the snow is clear on these damn roads the re-dyno will go down. :nervous:

Anyone want to place bets on what the gains are ?

OK I take it back not too happy with these.

I only reved it a little bit in the garage yesterday when I posted. Tonight I took it out for a drive now that the roads are somewhat clear of snow. Butt dyno doesn't feel much different and it's got SEVERE bees in the can sound when driving around.

Go WOT and above 4000 RPM it's great. At cruise and partial throttle it sounds like crap with all the buzzing. Maybe after a little more driving the sound will change but for now Im kinda pissed. I can re-use the header wrap from my old y pipe but I don't want these to rot out faster.

These are full Cattman headers? There shouldn't be any bees, I don't have bees with them, never had. You sure you have a solid install, y-pipe flex is not damaged or defective? What cat and muffler are you running?

Full Cattman headers.

I've done many Y pipe installs over the years on different Maximas. I've replaced headers on this car once before, so I don't think I installed anything wrong. IMO of all the Y pipes and exhausts I've gone thru this is one of the WORST for bees in the can sound. Worse than the Warpspeed Y pipe I had on there. NOT worth the $800+ these go for.

From what I can tell the headers and Y pipe looked OK. There was some fine metal shavings from their grinding and some excess weld spatter. I cleaned out every bit that I could get to and ran the engine without the cat converter attached. That blew out the rest of the shavings I could not get to.

My other exhaust mods are in my first post, nothing is cheap or ricey by any means. Before with the WS Y pipe it had only slight bees and it went away once I wrapped the WS Y pipe. Im gonna do the same with this one sometime see what happens.

DandyMax 12-20-2007 07:03 AM

Have you talked to Brian about this? I don't know what to tell you, except that I've never had bees at all, and I do not regret buying my Cattmans at all. I have the older Gen I type though... You may have a defective/loose flex section causing the noise. Just a guess, I'd suggest talking to Brian.

Ceasars Chariot 12-21-2007 02:40 AM

I have Gen 1 as well, no bees! hope you get it worked out. do you have a way to do a video ?

streetzlegend 12-22-2007 05:25 AM

bees in a can is usually eliminated by adding a resonator, I had a 22" magnaflow resonator, completely eliminated every sign of rasp.

The LSS B pipe has a long Magnoflow resonator on it.

98SEBlackMax 12-27-2007 10:58 PM

OK the re-test is this Saturday at 2 PM. :D

We will see how it does power wise.

michaelnyden 12-29-2007 01:35 AM

lighter wheels would put down a lot more power...I see that yours are 50-55lbs each with tires...that is really killing your power!
