4.5 max bolt-on dyno's :4 diff set-ups
Well I figured I would put this up for anyone that may be on the wall about making certain purchases or changes to their setup with the fear of loosing power or making it worth the bucks.
here are 4 runs all in a 97 3.5 swapped car, all have a home made ebay filter in fender cold air 3", and what i consider stock manifolds (ebay shorties) (thats what the car had when i got it id use altima headers), no cat converter on any runs, and vis delete plate and safc2 , stock ecu on all runs as well
runs 003 and 006 wer done on 10/2010, 009 and 011 on 03/2011 and all on the same dynojet dyno
any differences will be noted on each run
run 003: regular ebay 2.25 y pipe, greddy sp2
this set-up trapped best 103 heavy traction issues and a 14.0
run 006: same as run 003 but with an electric cutout at test pipe
very low, banged around alot, didnt seal properly, great for instant budget power but pretty annoying overall
run009: custom made non equal length 3" y pipe, and 3 inch catback w maganflow 12" resonator and 22" muffler
run011: same as run 009 with ssim and full nwp spacer kit.
the spacers helped keep runs consistand after making an hour drive to dyno and still seeing constant numbers, prob didnt do much more
i would love to not be lazy and do some real long tube headers, either obx or altimas w a 3" y pipe for a few more ponys, but the work and money to me is not worth the 3-5 horses id expect
not sure if an aftermarket ecu will help with more timing, dont plan on extending the limiter since power is falling, but ssim def was a pro for me. and if sparks makes another intake id like one too

I did 2 non ssim pulls first when i got on the dyno, didnt touch the safc, then i put on the ssim and did a few pulls , maybe changed the safc settings once or twice. i think i may want to make it slightly richer but its pretty much tweaked right now. i had a stillen pop / velocity stack intake i wanted to test instead of the cheap filter on the coldair pipe, but time didnt permit since i wasted it on swapping intakes. its on the car now so maybe it helps , maybe not. I expected the ssim to help a bit more but i was content it didnt loose any power with it. im on the fence with the eu, not sure its worth the effort

Those headers are def choking up the top end. Great numbers with those on btw. Once you get some headers in there, I bet you'll be wanting to extend the limiter
OBX/cattman/altima headers are hardly long tubes. More like mid-length. But it's the best we've got.
Would it make the fanboys angry to compare these numbers to DEKs with full boltons (and proper headers) and EU tuning that can't make this much?

thanks man, yeah i have heard that these shorties are prob worse than stock or same. one day i will get a deal on some cattmans without the y pipe which i would do my own 3" like the one you are running, and then ill do the header install. i cant drop that money in them when im semi content with the car now. maybe the eu gives me a few more ponies.
yeah... dek 3.5 non full swap haters.... guys have full boltons and may not see these numbers
i was a tad sad with the ssim, thought it be worh some more (it wasnt a cheap mod with the spacers )

a local machine shop here in md wants 150-160 to duplicate the ssim job

how much more power you think? it would have to be worth while
#15
I dont think that is totally true. I have my own wideband. Get rid of the shorty headers if you want to make power. Unless your going to boost it.

As much as I love to see high HP deks, the term "no replacement for displacement" still applies. And with all things equal, a 3.5 will make more power than a 3.0 no matter how you slice it. Even if peak numbers end up being similar, I can guarantee that the 3.5 will have a more efficient power band/tq curve. Resulting in a faster car...

I think with more timing, headers and cutout you could hit 260hp. An extended rev limiter is not needed if you don't have cams or alter cam timing my car fell on it's face after 6800 n/a

Amen!! you know it... maybe when someone decides to buy stainless wire for their mig welder i may venture back to the boost side

i was waiting to get the seals replaced on my pt70 , but didnt get a chance to , it will be on the dyno next week with the pt63 pump gas no alky tune. VA is bogus, there are like a million turbo rebuild spots in miami fl, up here, far and few and want an arm and a leg
#28
I guess it depends on what you get said parts for. I bet what I paid for my Cattman headers, cams and EU. Im sure it wont be less than what I paid.
#29
I say dont spend anymore money on NA. so what if you gain another 20whp from cattmans. it still going to be only 260, me and you know thats BORING! Keep the EU for future projects, dont spend anymore money on your current setup, and just wait for when you can boost.
