Question about manual transmission gear oil
 

I was wondering if anybody knows the part number for the Nissan GL-4 Gear Oil, I been trying to look for GL-4 gear oil at auto parts store with no luck. The dealership asked me for the part number, as he can't look it up in the catalog. so I was wondering if anybody would have that info, or know where I can get them and how much they will cost. I would consider redline or amsoil, but they are quite expensive and I don't know if it is a good idea to switch to synethic with my car at 95K miles.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

imo i'd go for a synthetic gear oil..rather than nissan's oil

just another question i had to add...i put amsoil in the tranny a few weeks ago...and the bottle said compatible with GL-2 through GL-5 on the back...
it seems like its the only one to choose from, so is this what all the other amsoil users are using??

because GL-5 oil is no good for maxima's.

If an Applied Vehicle equipped with Manual Transmission needs servicing for warranty repairs, Nissan Manual Transmission Fluid (MTF) HQ Multi 75W-85 oil (P/N 999MP-MTF00P) is required. See this bulletin for detail.

I bet it is cheaper than Redline or AMS Oil.

Cheaper < > better, especially with the manual gear lube analyses that a few users have had done.


The OEM stuff shouldn't be used more than 15k or so.....

I will probably go with syntheic then, since even dealers have to special order the OEM ones and I have to get 12 qts if I order. Do you guys think is ok for me to switch to synethic tho with 95K miles on the car?

Amsoil makes 80w90 synthetic gear oil that is specifically GL-4 compatible...I just ordered 2 gallons :)

Part number is AGT-1G for a gallon. Talkinghorse can give you the hookup.

Dev: Amsoil's formulations, while meeting GL2-GL5 are compatible with a GL4 only transmission. The chemistry in them is designed to buffer the softer metals from the EP additives that cause the problem, making them safe to use. I (and many others) have had no problems running the gear oil in GL4 only applications.

Redline makes a GL-4 only synthetic tranny fluid. MT-90.

I'm guessing all the Amsoil gear oils are the same, and I'm using the same one as you are right?

mine is 80W90, came in gray bottles, and the fluid is blue.

i've heard really good things about this fluid, so i went along with it...seems fine so far.

and now i have piece of mind knowing its not GL-5 fluid.

Amsoil actually has several different gear oils available. They have the Series 2000 75W-90 which is their best gear oil and the one I currently use in everything in a 75W-90 weight. They also have gear oils that meet GL2-5 in 75W-90 and 80W-90 (among others). A third gear oil choice is the 80W-90 that is a GL4 only application that is primarily marketed towards the marine crowd for use in lower units. I have used all three levels in GL4 only applications with no issues.

ok it seems like i posted the wrong info...im not using 80W90 (i don't know why i thought i did - i think my friend is running that in his redline mtl)

That's their best gear oil. I use it exclusively in my own appilcations now, including GL4 transmissions, with no worries.

How does this tranny fluid compare to MT-90? Are there any major differences I should take into consideration?

Redline seems to have the edge in cold weather performance and shift feel. Amsoil's philosophy differs from Redline's in the regard that Redline seems to focus on maximum performance period, while Amsoil is more geared wear protection. There have a been a few posts here from people who have used both under race conditions and have noted that on teardown, there was notably less wear with Amsoil than with Redline. I believe "Sin" was one of the members who posted this some time ago.

Where can I get these two? I can't seem to find either of them in auto parts stores around here. All they have is the generic crap.

'Tis not easy to find Amsoil or Redline products locally, unless you have "real" racing/performance shops.

You can purchase Amsoil Series 2000 75W/90 Gear Oil from member iwannabmw (PM or e-mail him privately). He sells Amsoil products at practically his cost for maxima.org members. He'll have you hooked up in no time.

yeah he's been doing it for a long time and is very knowledgable with amsoils products and how they compare.

i would have ordered from him if i wasn't in canada (i've been getting killed with brokerage fees - to the point that i pay more brokerage fees than the product itself). the other thing is i changed my oil on the spur of the moment.

I just wanna be able to keep my options open seeing that I'm still not sure which one I'm gonna go with.:confused: What are the MAJOR differences between the two? Iwannabmw commented on the fact that Amsoil seems to protect better in race conditions but what about normal conditions? If the Redline protects just as well in normal driving while still providing improved shifter feel, I just might go with that. What do you think?

I've had it in my car. It was night and day way better than the stock OEM stuff, but I can't compare it to the Amsoil tranny fluid because I've never used it. MT-90 is very popular with guys on the org, too. You probably can't go wrong with either the Amsoil or Redline.

:eek: Now it's $7/quart! When I got it it was $5. You'll need 5 quarts, of which you'll use 4.5, assuming you have a 4th gen Maxima.

Iwannabmw gave a concise, accurate, and dead-on assessment of each oil. It's up to you to decide. I'm more of an overall best protection kind of person, so I would choose Amsoil Series 2000 75W/90.

HOw much did those quarts of tranny fluid Dev has cost? IwannaBMW how much can I get 5 of those for?

Yep, it's frowned upon to quote anything other than retail. On the Series 2000 75W-90, full retail is $9.20/qt. Your cost would be less than that:)
