That stuffs rarer than a purple cow isn't it? ;) What little I've heard about it has been positive, but it's not cheap either!

I'm basically myself trying to pick between redline and amsoil. I've heard that amsoil may be a better protector, at the cost of performance. In reality both are probably damn near the same though. I'm lucky enough to live in a city with a local redline dealer :D

i can get royal purple tranny fluid at a place called Carboys in houston. i think NAPA carries it

I bought Redline MT-90 a long time ago, but havent put it in yet, cause first i want the dealer to work on my transmisison and fuel cut......then ill put it in

I hope that's not your FIRST change. Had my OEM fluid tested at 15K and it was ready to be changed.

I'm at 57.5k and about to change it. Unless it was changed before I bought the car at 37k, it's never been changed! :(

Make sure to get a Blackstone sample kit(FREE) and send it in for analysis(~$20).

Hmm, that's a good idea :) I wonder why nobody here has used amsoil yet, but the results are quite interesting.

There are a lot of people who use the Amsoil gear oil on this board. What I think you'll find is that Redline is used more often around here in transmissions, but Amsoil is used more often in engines.

im about to change to MT-90 at 22K miles, will i need to change the filter and the plug too or just stay with them and just change the oil???

The MT doesn't have a filter and I'm not sure what you mean by "plug", but all I did was drop the OEM fluid and refill with MT-90.

I have amsoil gear oil and it was a definite noticeable change! It made the shift like butter. I think Redline and Amsoil have pretty much the same effect. I bought Amsoil from iwannabmw with my amsoil motor oil. I will be making another order here soon iwannabmw.

So the Manual tranny in a 2000 maxima will definitely not need more than 5 quarts? Ordering some is taking a long time and I want to be sure I don't underdo it ;)

yeah, i have a 2000 and changed the fluid myself, really simple. But the max(00 & 01) only needs 4.5 quarts for sure

I changed my ATF and motor oil today at Jiffy Lube's. Cost of draining old ATF and filling it with the new one is 99 bucks. I got oil change for free. :)

Make sure you tell them to flush out the old ATF and put the fresh oil in to use up the whole 10.5 quarts. If they do drain and re-fill it's only gonna use up 3.5-4 quarts.

For motor oil, I did drain and re-fill and I used up 4.5 quarts.

edit: I used AMSoil for my 2k2, BTW.

I have been using Mobil 1 syn since 15k. Have about 40k now. Not really a big diffence between this and stock fluid though. I might try redline next time around, but it's harder to get a hold of.

just go to summit.com. you can order 5 quarts online for around $50-$60.

I was thinking of doing the switch to Redline but I've read a couple different places where it says 'not for street use in cold weather climates'. Well, being in Chicago I'm wondering if I should not use it.

so no one really knows about royal purple. i have a hard time believing that.

I drive a 6th gen and already have about 13,000 miles on the car. My question is when should I check/change over to Redline MT oil if I plan to?? I figured after I hit 20k but what are the benefits of this stuff? I know a lot of cars run it so it must be good stuff. thanks

As with synthetic engine oil the benefits are theoretically decreased wear, and in this case a better feel in your transmission.

One of the huge reasons I went with MT90 is that I was _utterly unable_ to find a GL4 gear oil locally, whether it was dino or synthetic. My Nissan dealer sells prestone gl5 for their GL4-spec trannies, but that's a bad idea. So I knew I'd have to order something so I went with MT90.

Swapped the oil yesterday. I bought the car at 37k (not sure if it had ever had the fluid changed), and last night with 59k the oil level was still full and it drained a nice clean looking amber. Damn stuff still seemed in great condition. I will also mention that the smell of it is neuseating. I don't mind regular oil but this stuff's odor really made me turn my stomach. It didn't smell burned or anything, but it's a very foul smell. Took almost exactly 4.5 quarts of MT 90 to put it back up to the fill plug hole. You'll need a #12 metric open headed socket to reach the drain plug, which is at the back of the transmission and there is a black metal brace in the way of it (Pictures are avaiable in the two links on the fluids FAQ thread, stuck at the top of the fluids forum).

EVERYONE should be ordering from the place in the parts list sticky. With the 10% off code, it's $6.30/qt. and with shipping works out to around $7/qt. SHIPPED TO YOUR FRONT DOOR! Honestly, it's not going to be much if any cheaper elsewhere and IMO, it can't get any easier coming to your front door vs. driving accross town and finding it's always out of stock, like I used too.

Anyways, I RECOMMEND changing the Nissan OEM fluid for 2K-2K1s at 15K. I've got about 4K to go on my MT90 before my next sample, so I'll know how it fairs up compared to OEM fluid.

Since 95-01s use 4.5qts. vs. 02+ 2.5qts., I'd recommend changing it sooner on 2K2+, but until someone has it analyzed, we won't know for sure. Less fluid means more often changes typically, but Nissan may have designed the 6spd better or something.:gotme:

Synthetics like Amsoil or Redline are going to have a lower pour point then OEM, so that doesn't hold water IMO.

I'd switch out the OEM fluid to Amsoil or Redline.
