5w30 or 10w40

I always seem to remember hearing 5w30 in the winter 10w30 in the summer, but everbody here seems to recomend 5w30 all the time. I already got 10w40 GTX, should I get 5w30 instead? Also what's the purpose of warming the engine up before changing the oil? Sorry for all the newbie questions but this is my first time changing the oil since I got the car last fall (didn't want to lay in the snow to change it during the winter , so I had it done). Thanks in advance.

Use 5w-30 unless your engine is showing signs of wear (abnormal noises, oil consumption, etc). Engines are designed to operate on an oil with a given thickness...in theory, 10w-40 could actually increase engine wear and lower fuel economy. 5w-30 will provide you the flow needed for winter start-up protection and the protection you need in the summer.

Warm oil flows better from the crankcase than cold oil does, so it gives you a better drain.
