AMSOIL GL-4 75w-90 = EXCELLENT!

Just wanted to post this:

The regulars here will remember that I was running AMSOIL 2000 for about 40k miles. Notchy, chunky, and bad-synchro thru all six gears. NOT the right stuff for our gearboxes!

I changed-out the 2000 to the new Gl-4 the other day, and WOW! - what a difference!
Smoother overall, not nearly as crunchy or notchy, and just feels RIGHT.
It's not a MIRACULOUS improvement....but it was noticeable even on the first row thru the gears.

My gearbox has ALWAYS been notchy thru the synchros, but it finally feels decent. It STILL is notchy, but that's just the way it is.

Good stuff that AMSOIL!!! I highly recommend.....Talkinghorse is a fantastic source for the stuff as well....

There are a number of posts in the Lubes section of this site that say in no uncertain terms -- Only Use a GL-4 Gear Oil.

Your experience only confirms this strong position taken by me and others.

I could not agree more. He sells at a good price, is prompt when you have questions, and he gives you a discount. I too could not recommend a better source for Amsoil products.

...ah yes, grasshopper -- but 4 years ago when I changed to the 2000 AMSOIL only had the 2000 flavor, and no GL-4 specific. And it was ONLY recently that AMSOIL re-released the GL-4 that opinions swayed to the conventional wisdom that the 2000 was not suited to our purposes!!

Be that as it may....I'm happy to have finally switched!

I am in the same bucket as GR, but I have a 5spd. When I purchased the "original" AMSOil 2000 series I was told "its fine, you’ll have no problems". As time wore on, shifting became harder and downshifting if not properly rev matched was a joke. I only put about 20K on the lube.

I put the MTG in and thought "well a couple days and we shall see". Wrong. I noticed IMMEDIATELY when I could put it directly into reverse w/o putting into fourth first. Its very smooth right now. I will see how it all comes together after some miles get put on it and it gets cold. This car sits out all the time.

I am pleased as all get out. Between bleeding the clutch fluid and the MTG its like when I drove it off the dealers lot.

Alas, the Viffie has moved on. Just could not stand riding around all the road raging cages and the teenagers on cell phones. It was becoming more and more like a video game, but I didnt get the extra lives.

I sold it and picked up my MR2 listed below in my siggy. Not the same, but its a track carver with "some" protection!

Well, the car has had time to sit for a long period of time in the cold and it still shifts very nice. I put about 300 miles on it. LOL. But still, its nice on a 25 degree startup. Unfortunately because of the ice I had to crawl in through the back passenger door because the others were frozen shut!
