2004-2008 Oil / Filter

So I noticed the sticky on oil and oil filters but I found it to be very confusing since it talks about all generations. So I was wondering if we could have a separate thread for 6th gens. I just bought a 2007 Maxima SL and want to make sure I get all the basic maintenance correct.

In my 2000 Maxima I used the fully synthetic Mobil 1 and the OEM filter. Does this still remain the best combo for 07 maximas? Anyone think another is better?

Also in terms of CVT transmission oil does it have to be changed and if yes how often?

Thanks.

Congrats on your purchase, bro.

I have read a lot about full synthetic oil change and I know M1 with the OEM filter is not the best.

For me, I just switched to full synthetic at 30k. I did my oil change 2 weeks ago, M1 Extended Performance and the M1 EP filter. It is guaranteed for 15k miles, but I hope to do 7500 only with it. Then, I will switch to Amsoil. And stick with Amsoil, except it is not as I have heard it is.

As for the M1 EP, I can't comment too much as I have driven only about 400 miles so far.

As for the cvt, the stealerships recommend changing it every 30k. So they recommend you change it 30, 60, 90, 120 and so on.

Personally, I wanted to do mine at 30k, but changed my mind. That thing is good for 100k. And for 200 bucks to change it, I will pass. But will change it at 60k. 30k is too early, men. My car still runs like new!

But maintenance is personal. You can choose different.

i dont like the OEMs because they are just Frams in disguise. If you want to save money, use the walmart supertech filters, at least they still have metal endcaps, and they're like only $3.

i use M1 or M1EP depending on my mood, and a M1-110 oil filter. They're $13 at autozone but oh well, their synthetic fibers are supposedly better so yeah lol. no use in using good oil if your filter can't filter out the crap fast enough.

CVT transmissions have their own special fluid, but yeah you should change them every 30k miles or so.

In your 2007, you still have a VQ35-DE, so just use Mobil 1 5W-30 ($22 at walmart) and a mobil 1 M1-110 oil filter. Books will say use M1-108 because its smaller and the same size as the OEM, but the M1-110 is a little longer and it still fits very easily (ive done it) so no worries, just get that one. more filter area is better anyways.

Thanks guys....I just posted a poll to maybe make things a bit more simple.

PetitFrereMaxima 08-04-2009 06:47 PM

Is there a way to know the people who voted for what oil? The amsoil to be precise.

I would like to talk to the guys that currently use amsoil in their 04 to 08. I want to get reviews as I plan to go to amsoil when I change my M1 EP after 7500miles.

Everyone who uses Amsoil is happy with it. personally i wouldn't buy oil for $9 a quart. Mobil 1 does just as good (sort of) so its basically preference.

04-08 is still a VQ35 so basically most can answer your question.

I can not easily answer the poll above. I am running Mobil 1 that I bought 4 years ago (at a great price). When I finish with that oil, I have some synthetic Pennzoil that I need to also use. Not as good as M-1 -- but OK (got it at a close-out price). When I have used all of the "old" motor oil I have sitting around, I plan to go to Amsoil. I don't plan to spend $9 a quart for it, either. Check with talkinghorse on this site as he can get you a great price on Amsoil oils.

I have been using M-1 oil filters for some time (bought them at a great price). The new OEM filters have become a piece of junk. They are OK if you change your oil every 3-4 K miles, but I run my synthetic for 10K miles and want a filter that will go that distance. I will be looking for a quality filter at a great price after I use the one last OEM filter that I bought before they were cheapened.

If you upgrade to the better and bigger Nissan # 15208-9E000 you justs about as good filtration as the Mobil 1 filter though you still would have to still have to change filters every 3500 miles or so even though the synthetic can go 10k

SilverMax_04 09-01-2009 11:23 PM

I have one last 15208-9E000 that I bought 2 years ago. Others on this site have advised that the new versions of this filter no longer are built with metal end-caps but with cardboard. I will use the last old 9E000 filter at my next oil change and run it for about 10 K miles with Mobil 1 oil. But I will not be buying any more of the Nissan filters -- even with this parts number.

One final point. The 9E000 is not as big a filter as the Mobil 1 - 105 filters that I have used for my last 3 oil changes. Bought them at a great price. Hope they go on sale again before I need another filter (after the last 9E000).

I will cut the one I take off my car next oil change in half and post pics.

Pretty sure that filter is discontinued, and the new filter for our car is slightly bigger than the Nismo filter. For 11 bucks it's not worth it IMO.

I've heard that the M 1 - 105 has been discontinued, and I've heard that it is still available. Not certain what to believe. There are other good filters out there. I just need to find one at a good price. I certainly agree that a filter is not worth $11 plus tax.

Pretty sure it hasn' been made for awhile. No store has them and none on ebay.

walmart supertech filters are decent for the price. look at the teardowns on google. they actually have metal endcaps and bypass valves. more expensive frams aren't even that good.

I was doing some shopping last night at walmart and looking at the supertech 7317 filter. Interestingly I noticed two things in the stores comparing that to the Mobil M110 filter. The supertech is the same in appearance except the branding sticker...size is the same, thread is the same, even the stamping and gasket is the same between these two. In fact the supetech claims it has 2x normal filtration capabilities *don't know what that means* but the just is that everything looks the same and the laser etching of production time is the same *championlabs manufacturing*-- just wondering if anyone has noticed this and can comment. Feel that the supertech for 2.84 is a better value than the mobil 1 at 12 if all appears the same.
