Due for an Oil Change in 1500 Miles
Alright so I am coming up to my oil change interval, I am due at like 63,xxx I am currently at like 627xx, not exactly sure but getting close, I have a VQ35, Is the Mobil 1 M1-108 a good Filter, what motor oil should i use with that? Royal Purple or Castrol GTX? I think the M1 filters are kinda small no? the last oil change I got the dealer did because I had gotten warranty work done, and they had to drain my oil etc, so they had to change it.

M1 filter is good and has a fit for your car.
As per me, why go with just M1, when they have M1 EP? I just did that. M1 EP with M1 EP filter. My car talks to me now! Says.., "I feeeeelllll goooood!"
Autozone has a good deal going on now. Castrol full synthetic with a K&N gold filter for 27.99. That, I think, is a good deal.
I don't know much about Royal purple. Its your choice. I think all synthetics are good, especially with a very good filter. People choose their oils based on research or after trying it out.
Goodluck with your decision.

castrol syntec is crap.
the mobil 1 m1-108 works, but use the m1-110 instead. its not listed as compatible, but it is. It is slightly longer which equals more filter space with equals more filtration. trust me it fits, me and lots of others use that filter on their vq35s.
dont use royal purple, just use mobil 1 or amsoil instead. read the oil FAQ THREAD for more details...

I have heard mixed things about RP so I personally would stay away from it.
From what I have read, the best bang for you buck oils are castrol gtx (conventional oil) or penzoil platinum (synthetic).
As for filters, personally I bought a case of amsoil Oea-13 filters from HTPerformace (you can also contact talkinghorse). They came out to the same price as M1 filters and they are probably the best filters out there.
And also as Col Ronson said, read this sticky.....

Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic is the only thing I use. The UOA's (Used Oil Analysis) are much better than Mobil1/EP and it costs less. Wal Mart is running a $15 rebate for a Wal Mart gift card on a 5 quart jug they are selling for $20. I also think the M1 filter is over kill. You can use a much cheaper Purolator Pure One or a SuperTech WalMart makes with the same results unless you plan to do an extended drain of 15k miles or more. If you plan to use a M1-110 filter, you can use it twice (for 2 oil change intervals). Drain it out and re-install.
What are your oil change intervals?

STILLENGLE, I am on the same boat as you.
My car has 83K and thinking about swtiching to synethic. I just bought mobil 1 sp last week and still decide what filter I should get. The sticky ^ is very useful, and I think I am going to try either mobil 1, bosch, or even purolator. I think as long as we change the filter twice in 1 interval then we should be fine.

I personally do not believe in changing filter twice. That is putting a new filter to filter an already old oil. Why not go on and put new oil too? I use M1 EP with same filter. No complaints after 1100 miles already. After 7500 miles with this oil, it will be Amsoil all the way! Oil, filter, air filter, cabin filter, fuel additive and wiper blades!

Looks like Amsoil + M1 filter (Maxima forums gold std)....
7500 miles on M1EP/Amsoil is an overkill. Why don't u guys do a UOA and know how long the OCI can be extended? I ran SuperTech dino for 5K miles at my 150K UOA and the report was terrific (similar to running Chevron dino). I have switched over to SuperTech Syn at 160K and will run the full 7.5K on it before another oil change.
I would rather spend the extra dollars on a good dinner w/ family.

AMSOIL was the first company to offer an extended life filter that was recommended for 12,500 mile change intervals...it was a high-end/heavy duty filter manufactured by Hastings that contained a full-depth filtering medium...that filter was available in the 70's and 80's. AMSOIL graduated to the "Super Duty" line of filters in the early 90's which contained a blend of natural, synthetic and glass fibers to enhance efficiency and durability...these were very high quality filters. The Mobil-1 Extended life filters available today are a blend of natural and synthetic fibers. A couple years back, AMSOIL raised the bar once again with the Ea line of filters...these filters contain a 100% synthetic filtering medium and are constructed with the highest quality components...the Ea filters are the longest lasting, most efficient filter on the market today and are designed to perform for the full length of an extended oil change.
I was recently in an auto parts store and I looked at the highly regarded Pure One oil filter. The Box said it was 99.xx% efficient, which I thought was pretty impressive. I then read the microscopic print and it cited the testing protocol used to determine the efficiency. Much to my surprise, the efficiency was rated at 40 microns, which is pretty large. For comparison purposes, a Mobil 1 filter is 99.2% efficient at only 25 microns and 50% efficient at 10 microns. An AMSOIL Ea filter is 100% efficient at 20 microns, 98% efficient at 10 microns and over 80% efficient at 5 microns!
Life is full of choices, but if one uses a high quality synthetic oil and intends to run it for 7500 miles or beyond, it makes sense to use a long-life, high quality filter and change them both at the same time. Unless a cheap filter is clogged and oil is by-passing the filter, a fresh one will not be any more efficient than the one which is being removed. An AMSOIL or M-1 is really not that much more expensive than lesser quality filters...the longer service life and better efficiency make them a better choice for extended life oils.
