you really should read the "which oil to use" sticky in the fluids and lubricants subforum...
I use Castrol GTX 5W30 and all is well.

If the engine does not have any oil leaks, DO NOT USE high mileage oils.
High mileage oils have additional seal swelling additives in them. Once you start using a high mileage oil, you shouldn't go back to conventional oils. (asking for trouble)
That's the only real difference between "High Mileage" and conventional motor oils. Their lubrication properties are basically the same.

Plus, OP asked about CONVENTIONAL oil anyhow, BlackThorn.

Why is this a thread? Choosing an oil, thickness or brand shouldn't be a life making decision. Everyone on here will tell you what "they" use, it's what you feel comfortable with and what you can afford or just go by manufacturer recommendations.

I've been using synthetic since 200k, which is only about 4 oil changes (I'm crazy I change it every 5k, which is what I did on dino juice). My philosophy changed over the years, I swore by 5W30 Castrol dino juice for about 10 yrs.
I just think that when on sale, synthetic is no more expensive, when it's not on sale, it's a little more expensive. Pennzoil Platinum is available at Wal Mart for $22.47 for a 5 qt. jug, and there is a $10 rebate. At $12.47, I don't know why anybody wouldn't use it (it doesn't meet BMW LL-01, so ok, you wouldn't use it in a BMW). Bob is the oil guy seems to love PP.
Since our other two cars use synthetic, I figured why not let the 98 Maxima join the club.

not to beat an old horse, but i'm at 245,000 and would'nt change over to synthetic if you paid me. it's thinner, and i have a leak or 2 and would'nt spend the money or time to do it at this point. at your mileage, i would do synthetic cause it would benefit the motor over the years. i do 5w30 all year round with no issues.
