Anyone make their own car ramps?

I've never liked the metal or plastic ones so I built my own. Used 2x10's stacked like a 3 story pyramid and they've served me well. I can easily do oil changes or anything else that doesn't require wheel removal very easily and don't have to drag the jack out or mess with stands. Anyone else rig something up of their own? I'm always looking for ideas.

The nice thing is you can build these to go about as high as you need to, you could even do a tranny swap with them if you got the stack high enough.

Yeah i built my own out of 2x10's. I got a set of those metal ones from work, but my car was to low to drive onto them, i just plowed them out of the way. they are kinda scetchy too.

I only used 2, i needed them just so i could get a floor jack underneath the front my car

Dropped 2.5" + stillen front lip FTL

I have those plastic ones, and they can be a pain. I line up my front tires and slowly "attempt" to pull up into them. It's great when you give it SLIGHT gas and the ramp kicks out and you are left hanging on only one ramp.

People with lowered cars: are you able to use ramps? I have to drive onto two 2x4s so i can fit a jack underneath.

I'm lowered and can get up onto my ramps. I think I paid about $35 for those black plastic one's at Advanced Auto. They work well if you don't punch the gas getting up onto them.

I do have some difficulty getting my floor jack under there sometimes though too.

I've got the K-Mart black ones too and its hit or miss whenever I use them. Let's see some pictures of what you made.

Any easy way to keep from pushing the ramps out of the way is to fasten them to a board long enough to reach the rear wheels so you have weight on the back end before the tires hit the ramps. with 1000lb on the ramps, they're not going to slide anymore!

that of course cuts down on the ease-of-use of the ramps, but it makes them much safer if you have a problem of the ramps sliding out from under the car.

I made my own ramps, but they are only about 2 inches tall. I use them to raise my car a little bit so I can get my jack under there.

So i was wondering.. I have some aluminum rims off my old car laying around and i noticed that they would make nice things to put my car on instead of buying jack stands (already have em why spend more money right?) do you guys think they would support the weight of a car when layed on the ground? I dont want to be under the car and then one break lol

Had some old 2x6 lumber lying around, so I cut them on an angle and made 2 ramps by bolting 5 together with threaded rods. Placed a wooden stop at the end just to be certain no one overshot the ramp. Just high enough to ride the cars up and change the oil. Our modified RX7 Turbo with the factory spoiler just clears the ramps, so I can drive onto the ramps, then jack the car up if need be.

I bought some 2x14" boards that I mitered at 45* and made the ramps 3 boards high but I haven't seen them in a while (haven't used them since I had my Maxima). I built them wide to make it easier to drive up on and they were heavy enough I never had to worry about them moving and didn't have any worries about them collapsing (some of the metal ones... ugh).

mine even with the 1.7 intrax drop and stillen lip all i have to do is pull up on the front lip and roll the jack under, as for ramps.... i have to jack the car up high enough to slide my metal ramps under the tire because theres noway i could roll up on them... as fpr the jacking up the rear tho i have to turn the jack so that the handle goes "up" and "down" inside the muffler tip pocket in the rear lip lol otherwise i couldn't raise the handle more than 2 inches which would make for a verrrry long process..

I just built me some really nice ramps last night. Lifts the whole car off the ground. Cost me about 100 bucks for materials, but I can get the whole car off the ground which is what matters. Will post pics soon.

So here are the pics I promised, and possibly the only ones in this thread. I might add another plank, to get a little bit more height. With the Creeper, I fit all the way through. Without it, I can lay there all day.

Here's a couple I found the other day:

Similar concept, but without the ones for the back.

Interesting idea for making your own drive onto ramp. I guess if you have the room, but I like the OP idea better.

For a while I used a setup like paramy, especially since getting a FWD car onto 4 standard ramps at once was nearly impossible, due to the aforementioned sliding.

For a while I had 4 of the (plastic) ramps all with the "hanging hole" at the narrow end that would attach to a short screw stickign out of a 12' 2x8 on each side, which eliminated the sliding issue, and that worked perfectly.

With AWD now, I haven't had to worry about that anymore obviously, since the drive wheels pull the ramp into the wheel when inching up, so I can do all 4 at once when the subaru or 4runner (in 4hi) need to go up.

I still don't entirely trust ramps, and when I'm up on them, I stick a couple of jackstands under there "just in case" lol...

btw, I use the "plastic" ramps that will clear a slightly lowered car, and have a rubber block on the bottom of the tip to keep it from sliding on the garage floor...

I also find that sometimes its just as quick to just jack up by the maxima's front center jack point and put 2 jack stands there, and not mess with the ramps at all

And since I'm always looking for a reason to post random photos I took for no apparent reason, this is a good time to use this one, since it shows my ramps, lol...

Bless you guys that still use ramps. I did that same thing for the longest time and just hated it during our winters here in Chicagoland. The last straw was when I was doing oil changes in January and actually had a ramp go flying under a car - twice in the same night.

That's when I finally decided that enough was enough and I started saving my pennies to buy my 4-post BendPak HD-9.
