Home Machine Shop Equipment - Smithy, Harbor Freight, Etc.
Has anyone got experience using the Smithy home 3 in 1 machine tools?
I've been getting by with an old bench top drill press fitted with a ghetto Harbor Freight X - Y stage with some cutting end mills. But I want to step up to something more accurate and with higher cutting power. The drawback is that it has to be able to fit through a standard sized door to get into the basement and cannot weigh more than 400 ~ 500 pounds as I will be moving it with the help of a few friends.
Looking to start milling more pieces in the shop and a small lathe to turn out bushings and other small parts. Not just for my car but for other people I know in need of small projects.
My budget is around $1000~$2000. There are many used industrial milling machines in that price around here on Craigslist, but they are to way heavy and large to fit. Then there are the crappy $300~$400 dollar Harbor Freight machine tools which are not much better than I already have. Any advice?
