Don's VB Mod

Ok so i'm getting it for 350 total from a friend including a oem swap. I'm getting either a local guy to do it for 80 bucks + price of fluid/ gasket etc, or a shop who will do it for 150 total, and will throw a tranny cooler on. I just want y'alls opinion on if this is a good deal? I'm planning on boosting pretty soon here so do you guys think this is good enough to run one pulley size smaller without blowing the tranny?

I believe a tranny cooler is about 40bux, and is easy to install. That would be a difference of about 30. Im not knowledgeable of sc, im poor! But I know for autos a tranny cooler is a must and many ppl reccomend a VB mod. Just my .02 hopes it helps

Or ... you could do a search on all the people who have had this mod on their Maximas and have yet to have a single problem.

I'm not sure if it's a good idea to do this now. If you look at the thread in the dealership/shop experience forum, a few people have had some trouble getting their VB from Don. I have the VB mod and I guess the mod is "ok". Shifts are faster, no problem with the VB itself. However, lags are definitely still there. I would recommend the VB if you plan to get nitrous or a SC to protect the tranny. Other than that, I wouldn't recommend it.

I usually agree with you, but on this one I have to go the other way. I have run my car with N2O for a while and have run with and w/o the VB mod. The N2O aside, the mod fit perfectly and I have had no trouble since the install. It will shift hard when you want and substantially faster than stock. It saves on tranny life by not allowing the laggy spinning between gears feel of the stock, plus it makes a positive shift everytime. In my case, it cut down the "lag" of the stock to almost zero. As for delivery issues, I can't really say anything but good things personally since Don contacted me and we made the transaction a very smooth one.

I do agree that it is a must for boosting/N2O, but I would suspect that it does have some advantages for modded N/A cars as well. If you are planning on boosting in any way, both the VB and tranny cooler upgrades are very good ideas.

thats ok, as i mentioned, it's used and im getting it from a friend. Any more opinions on the price / install? i'm getting vb no matter what happens, just not 2 sure on install =P

Install if yourself. There are directions on Don's site and plenty of people have installed it on themselves on the Org, so you can ask if you hit a snag.

Then get a tranny cooler and install that yourself too. Again, plenty of people have installed tranny coolers by themselves on the Org.

That is exactly correct. Do not pay anyone to install it unless you don't have time to spare. It is not a difficult install, just detail oriented (you have to follow the steps exactly). Make sure and read all you can on the org BEFORE you start to do the install because a few of us have run across things during the install that you will probably be glad to know before you start (i.e. checking the seals before re-install to avoid shift problems). Actually the prices you mentioned, specially the one that includes the tranny cooler, are not bad, but the danger is that there have been several people here on the org that paid local shops to install and ended up worse than when they started because the shop didn't know what they were doing. So, be careful. I always say that if you want something done right you have to do it yourself (most of the time).

I second that

If you're handy with tools then you can do it! I did it in 4 hours time using Don's Mobiletek instructions. You just have to be prepared ahead of time how you're going to label and store the bolts temporarily while taking out the vb. I did it by enlarging that bolt pattern pic and making a copy for each size of bolt. Then I just color-coded and circled the bolts in the pic so I know where each of them should go.
