I think I found out why I'm slow
After I got new tires, I went to the drag strip and only ran best of 15.0 at 92 mph. The track was partly to blame cause it wasnt hooking for anything. But I've never ran higher then 93.8 MPH. Yesterday I got my hands on some (gasp!) 17" Chrome Momo Arrow rims. Everybody knows these are the heavy as freakin balls. I weighed them on bathroom scale and came up with 47 pounds with worn Michelin Pilot tires. I then weighed my stock 16" SE rims that have new BFGoodrich GForce TA KDWS tires in 225 50 16.... and they weighed at 45 pounds! Dear lord thats really heavy. For only a 2-3 pound difference from the stock 16" which are supposed to be relatively light, to a 17" heaviest of them all rim. After putting on the momo's, the car really didnt feel much slower then before. I think the BFG Tires are heavy as balls. Although it is an excellent tire, the 400 AA A rating most likely came from putting on huge blocks of rubber. I think they may be better suited for domestic cars where they usually have more torque and are less effected by the unsprung weight.
The heavy weight in addition to my Quaife differential (heavier then stock) and my stereo (2 15" woofers, 3 amps) I drag down the drag strip no wonder my times are suffering. Time to get light weight drag rims. grr... I can't win. |
I thought you knew better than to drag with your stereo components in the trunk?

"I think I found out why I'm slow"
I thought you were going to say it was because you have a POS Maxima. Anyways, a 46lb combo isn't extremely heavy, but it doesn't seem out of range for what you have. The stock 16s weigh 19lbs and the BFGs weigh ~26lbs. There nothing out of the ordinary for a 225/50R16 to weigh 24-26lbs. Tires are heavy, especially low profile performance tires. Steel belts, heavy poly cords, and rubber tend to have a lot of mass. My Sumitomo HTRZ 225/50R16s weigh 24lbs and my K1s weigh 15lbs making for ~ 39lb combo. The overall mass of the 17" Arrows might not be that much more, but the rotating mass will be higher and you will be slower, especially mph wise. Dave |
