Today at a stoplight a riceboy rolled up next to me. Light turns green and I go ahead of him (traffic) and he revvs at me. Sounded like a lawnmower with a squeeling pig inside. I just shook my head and went on ignoring him.

If these fools want to kill themselves thats up to them, but taking innocent people with them is what is really bad. I would never race in traffic, and NEVER in those low speed zones. Even On 50mph LONG straight stretch roads I wouldn't go 90mph. I've raced on such a road and always shut it down at around 75mph. Mind you this was late at night with noone else in sight. Does that make it right? No. But given the circumstances it was impossible to refuse. At stoplights and what-not I wouldn't do it. I am paranoid that a cop is hiding down the road (speed trap), and if he were to catch us in the act of dragging we would go to JAIL and get licenses revoked. Not worth it!

People who street race feel they have something to prove. It means they are insecure about themselves or their ride. Notice how 90% of high class sports cars such as Corvettes, Porshes, Vipers, ect. are never involved in street races. They have nothing to prove, and as Maxima owners, we are on the same level as them performance/handling wise and have nothing to prove either. :p ;)

Y I really can pull up a lot of these kinds of threads in the past month. I am just getting annoyed because these kinds of thinks happen everyday. I feel bad for the innocent bi-standers because people should know when to stop or when not to race. Lets all just use some common sense:o

I just want to say that I see vettes, vipers, porches, supra's, and a host of other exotic cars race on the street. I see it on almost a weekly basis on the net and here in atlanta.

BTW.. the ONLY things I am saying is not everyone street racing has something to prove.. AND street racing is not limited to the honda/ford/nissan/mitsu/etc camp. And it's not just a certain age group.. people from 16-50 street race

Racing seems to be some desire to "beat out" somebody else, in such a case a perfect stranger. Why not channel that competiveness into getting better grades or a better salary, where it actually matters? I think there is definitely a correlation between insecurity and underachievement.

Why mod your car to make it faster then? I'm sorry, but that is ridiculous.

Going 90 on city streets: DUMB
Smoking a Civic off the line and shutting it down at the speed limit: FUN

Okay, so maybe it isn't a real race...But it's still a test of driver skill and your reaction time. I love racing my friends this way. I think that's the only way I would have beat my friend in his IS300.:o

Street racing doesn't have anything to do with General Maximas. Especially if it is on MTV, which isn't exactly known for their world class news reporting. Reporting on a female who likes to street race and likes to turn the table on guys isn't exactly a report discouraging street racing.

And this post was up before your post, it was simply brought to the top from yesterday. And your post wasn't deleted, it was moved to the Off Topic forum.

Further more, continue avoiding the swear censors and you won't last very long on this forum.

A better test of a driver's skill and reaction time can be measured at the track. What are you going to compare on the street? Burnout marks? Timeslips can shut a man up quicker than "I had you man! I had you!"

The show is called "Flipped". It is where they take someone and make them change their mind about what they are doing. The show is going to be VERY anti-street racing.

And MTV has one of the most credible news departments in the country. While their stories are geared towards a teen audience, they are extremely accurate and informative.

Axel Aug 7, 2002 11:36 AM

In Toronto Canada, street racing is getting out of hand. The cops are really trying to come down hard on all the street racers (we're talking organized racing here as opposed to just one stop light to another out of the blue).
They've developped a PACER program (Police And Community Educating Racers).

If that is the case, then I retract my comments about the program's contents. I don't watch MTV and from the description that was posted, it didn't seem like it was anti-street racing.

Still, it was off topic and did not have it's place as it's own thread. NixMaxGXE may feel free to post the description again in this thread if he wants.

The swearing is still unacceptable however.

While I rarely race on the street a friend of mine is the leader of "Midnight Club" a street racing club here in Brooklyn, New York. (Mostly races for money and slips). I have to say that organized racing is by far the safest type of street racing.

I understand what you mean, but I don't think there is any type of safe street racing...I mean I might sound like someone's dad, but if there aren't any EMTs or trained people like at a track who know how to handle a situation like that, then no matter what its not safe...plain and simple!

and also anything where you have to run when the cops come(be it they come or not) is not "safe" either.

hey! I played that game too! I have it for my playstation 2! Has he gotten out of New York yet and gone to face the World champion?

jdmmax Aug 7, 2002 12:28 PM

really unless the cops set up road blocks turning racers away from the favorite race tracks and stuff the cops will never get rid of street races. there is always the next place to go!!!!!! i think its just a big waste of time. if you really want to shut a track down. hire some extra cops and have them sit in the middle of the track on nights were races are supposeto break out. i garantee people will stop going. why cause there is a police officer sitting right on the middle of the track.
although i do admit that i do cruise over to the street races once in a while to check out some fast cars.

Additionally, a street is not maintained like a track. Bumps in the road, rocks, cracks, potholes that are unseen at the onset of a street race can cause the driver to lose control of a vehicle that just doesn't handle well at 100+ mph. Even in a deserted neighborhood, with people watching every street corner ahead of you, and not one person in the way...you still are driving on a surface not maintained for high speed driving and manuevering.

The difference in quality of one side of the street vs. another is enough to make a race which ends up at 1/2 car length pointless anyway. You haven't accurately measured performance coupled with driving ability if one car was hampered by the terrain of their side of the street.

Street racing has a high potential for disaster which is beyond a driver's control and does not accurately reflect the data you are attempting to gather.

Anyway, my post was mostly intended for those of you who will go out there and street race tomorrow and the next day. Don't fool yourself into believing you are in control of your destiny in a street race...you just can't control all the variables...PERIOD. Even track racing has significant risk for the driver...and street racing increases the risk 100-fold. If you're going to do it...at least stay away from anybody who is not voluntarily part of the risk factor, like the mother and three children in the mini-van smashed up in the photograph I posted at the beginning.

JDwyer2821 Aug 7, 2002 12:38 PM

an organized street race is an illusion + it is impossible.....

yes everyone has the designated meet up.
and everyone cruises over to the track.
spectators line up agaisnt the curb.
racers file in.
everyone knows the high beam singnals and everything.

but who regulates those idiots that decide they want to pull out of the spot they were parked in right when two cars leave the line.

who regulates the idiots out there that cruise in with there crews and just start driving on the wrong side of the street purposly swirving back and forth.

who regulates the idiots that pull out of there spots and starts trying to show of that he can do donuts and fwd power slide smim drift moves in there moms ford escort.

finally what happens when the cops come.
everyone just leaves calmly and quietly right???????
right................when the cops come the track scatters away like ants panicing. all bets are everything goes. cause no one wants to be that one guys that the cop decides to pick on.

sorry for the long post but.

street racing and organized does not go toghter.

Part of the problem is that there aren't that many tracks around and most kids don't want to pay $40 to run their car on a track a few times. I think it would definitely help the problem if the government setup a program that created more legal tracks and helped fund them so that the prices wouldn't be so high and kids wouldn't have to drive for hours to get to them. I rarely do street race but I know if there was a nearby track that I could go to often I would never even think of doing it.

I disagree with your assessment of the problem. It isn't the government's job to baby adults into taking responsibility for their lives and the lives of people around them. Owning a car and driving one takes a level of responsibility and self-control that people like the guy in Lakewood, WA (in the article I started this thread about) are not ready for. If you street race your car at 90 mph and smash into a minivan with three children in it, the government should take your car and license to drive away from you and not build a track cheaper and closer to your home.

The government helps pay for skate parks in Phoenix so kids don't destroy parking lots of local businesses. Why shouldn't they help subsidise this? It's a matter of public safety.

I think it's a great idea, although I doubt it would help prevent street racing. I have always thought that police should have some sort of presence at the track to encourage kids to go there- maybe hand out some "scared straight" type pamphlets with pictures of gruesome accidents. They could even soup up a cruiser and do some runs. It would be good for the community I think.

Just a thought......

Unfortunatally that's what happens when you try to show off to your friends what your car can do. In this case he ended up taking his own life along with the others who egged him on. I feel sorry for all the family involved especially! The kids killed arent with us anymore, its the familys still here who will have to suffer their whole lifes becuase they lost their loved ones.

I could never be a Paramedic or anything of that nature. They have to deal with this type of thing everyday. God bless medicsonic and all those who try to help people involved in situations like these!

If you were to substitute the phrase "The government" for " all taxpayers" and "they" for "we" it may have a whole different meaning. I, for one, don't think throwing our hard earned tax dollars at another government program solves the street racing problem.

However, your second suggestion has merit. The cost of those pamphlets and police presence would certainly be offset by a decrease in parametric calls, emergency room use and auto insurance rates.

What government program ISN'T a waste of money? Believe me, I'm about as conservative as one can get. Don't even get me started on our welfare programs and Social Security.

The city of Scottsdale wasted close to $5 million dollars on this piece of crap wall mural.
http://www.azcentral.com/community/a...ise0803Z8.html

Now we're getting WAY OT, but I'm saying that the money could be allocated. A track could potentially prevent a fatal accident on a city street. What the hell is this mural going to do?
