WHat do you consider the gears in cars that dont reach the top speed limit in the last gear? AKA VW Jetta and Cobra. Those fockers dont move no where when u floor them in 5th. Maxima does.
No the clutch in not burning when its engaged.

5th is not an overdrive. Drive a mustang COBRA and you will find out what an overdive is. 5th is the gear you reach your top speed thus its not an overdrive. Cars like cobra the 5th gear always StAys at like 2500 RPM and doesnt move.
Wanna know what wear and tear? U are causing preassure on ur flywheel and burning ur clutch. Why dont you drive in 5th all the time.
I get ~250 Miles per tank in NY traffik and like 450 on the highway. aND i DRIVE ROUGH.
What do you get driving in 5th all the time???

In the 5 speed maximas, 5th gear is an overdrive. The rotation of the output shaft of the transmission is slower than that of the input shaft. If you do a search, you'll be able to find the gear ratios of all gears in both a 5 speed and 6 speed manual transmission Maxima. In the 6 speed transmission, both 5th and 6th gears are overdrives.
Perhaps you'd like to petition the Society of Automotive Engineers to redefine 'overdrive'
If, in any gear, you can't accelerate, it simply means that your engine is not producing enough horsepower at that rpm to overcome the forces of friction and inertia. That's all.
If you try to accelerate from 1000 rpm in 5th or 6th gear, you'll not do so very quickly, because you're not generating very much horsepower at that RPM.
If you're cruising down the highway at 3000 rpm in 5th or 6th gear, and try to accelerate, you'll do so much more quickly than at 1000 rpm.
In sixth gear, running in middle triple digit speeds, you won't have reached redline, but you'll be unable to accelerate because you don't have the horsepower to push the car through the air any faster.
I'm going to have to go find those gear ratios again ...

Damn, that took a good 5mins to read through the entire thread...
I do the same thing as the other guys... once i get to about 40mph shifting 1st, 2nd,i just kick it 4th and cruise.... no accelerating really... keeping the same speed 40mph in 4th gear until i hit a light or something.

Lugging the engine like this is extremely tough on the pistons. The throttle is opened 100% and you're pushing the engine extremely hard, yet when the combustion starts, the pistons are hardly even moving and they're stuck right in the center of the combustion. It's a good way to burn up your pistons and put a lot of wear on your rings. From what I've read, it's also rough on the main bearings as well.
Lugging is definitely *not* something you want to do.
Whenever I'm below 2000rpm in a higher gear, I don't give it more than about one-quarter throttle until I get up to 2000rpm where the engine starts to make some torque and can actually pull away cleanly. Full throttle at 1000rpm in 5th is just insane.

Driving around 5th gear at low speeds is fine if you can accelerate without the shaking of the motor. Not to mention the pinging that usually happens too. This means you should accelerate gradually. I like to keep the motor at least above 2500rpm at all speeds. If I'm trying to be a cheap-*** fuel miser I won't cruise below 2000rpm.
Besides, why not avoid this situation by downshifting to a higher gear? It's better to let the motor sing at 3000rpm than to lug it. You have the response and acceleration when you need it. Anyone who is too lazy to downshift to a higher gear then I would suggest that you be one of the first to try the 5-speed to automatic swap
Sorry, I think some of you driving manual trannies are better off driving a car with an automatic. Poor car
