What's the benefit of having an oil filter heat sink?

Are there detrimental effects of having an oil filter heat sink?

Here's a picture of one

Unless you live in a very cold climate the cooler would be a fine idea. For really severe conditions an oil radiator would be even better. Cooling the oil extends it's life and takes some load off the engine cooling system. The problem is to find one of those sleeves to fit the tiny Max filter (the fit needs to be good for it to work).

Ya gotta love BMP:laugh: The theory is sound, but if you're really having problems with oil temp, install a cooler. What I really love is that want $30 for it and list the M20 as an application for it. This engine has the oil filter running 2 inches from the exhaust manifold. If you were to use this product you'd probably end up adding heat into that motor:eek:

Pinkabet, if you're really worried about oil temp, install a cooler. There are some out there that have bypass valves so you can use them in cold climates, but if you have to worry about cold in HI.......

The engine in your vehicle was built to function correctly without problems with the stock components. If you are really worried about the oil getting too hot and causing component wear (never seen proof of this in an unmodified engine) then install an inline oil cooler (kind of a small radiator to circulate coolant through). A heat sink for the oil filter would help minimally at best, I would imagine.

Thanks for the replies fellas...

I was wondering what the deal was w/ these things. Not that I'd try it. As it is, Honolulu is tiny, and my commutes rarely exceed 30 minutes. The engine doesn't really warm up by the time I get to work or get home. Also, MPG went from suck to blow when my job moved closer to home.
