Maybe respraying the max - couple of Q's for Bodysop folks...
 

Hey all,

I resprayed my Bronco a couple of years back (Primer/base/Clear Black Urethane Enamel) and it all went cool - mostly. I made myself a spray booth in my 1000 sqft workshop by lining the walls in plastic sheets, then putting a large fan blowing air out the door.. I wet down the floor just before spraying to control dust.... but....

I still wound up with dust contamination on the paint. Probably about 100 specks per panel.

How do I stop that for when I spray the Max? I went to the paint supply place and they said dust is inevitable and that I should sand and buff any specks after each coat. Sounds a little much? Maybe after the last primer coat, and after the last color coat and after the last clear coat?

Or is it possible to completely control dust?


Secondly - I saw a picture of the inside of a bodyshop once and the picture showed two cars side by side (about 8 feet apart) and one of the way being sprayed - just one panel - but still... That would suggest that they don't spray cars in a booth - or at least not until the final coats.

Any advice on dust control?

What about putting a large drop cloth on the floor? Would that help?:gotme:

Lets see, I think we spend about $25,000 bucks on our spray booth. It has 10 micron filters in the air exchanger, epoxy coated floor, air line water/oil seperator/dryers. Comes with a plastic monkey suit so no contaments from your clothing are attracted to the static charge thats generated from spraying. We still wet the floor down prior to painting and the booth gets scrubbed clean every weekend.

We still get just a few specs of dirt now and then, nothing that a quick wet sand and buff can't get out.

You did everything perfect for a home paint job. Wetting the floor, hanging plastic ect.. But there's no way you can even come close to a clean paint job unless you use a clean room/spray booth. Your exhaust fan is need so you don't suffacate yourself, but that alone is bringing in unfiltered air which is full of contaminents.

usually they spray the final coat or top coat in the booth. primer you can spray ummm outside the booth...(if EPA is ok with it and etc) :D
