DYNO COMPARISON: Battle of the Maxima 3.0's: 3rd Gen vs 4th Gen vs 5th Gen

My latest dyno comparison article will take a look at the 3.0 Maxima SE's from 1992 through 2001 and pit them all against each other. This is a new way of looking at an old debate that never quite seems to die around here. :)

The format will be a bit different this time however, as Kevin has given me the opportunity to make these a little more professional by offering to host them in the Shop Talk section of the main page. This should be a nice improvement since HTML is a bit more versatile than vbulletin code is. Thanks, Kev! :D

Anyhow, here is the link to the article...

Feel free to stop back here after you've finished reading to discuss. This thread is also linked at the end of the article. Enjoy! :)

Lets do it, cause at the track, it was I see cases of old vs. new all the time.

Eclipse, older is better.
Z, older is better.
Sentra, older is better.
240sx, older is better.
Maxima, older is better.
Civic SI, older is better.

shall we go on:kiss: :attention

obviously you are still posting here so that means i didn't ban you

Craig Mack Mar 11, 2003 05:49 PM

Steve,

You seem to stress that wheel weight has a significant impact on how fast the car is. My 18x8.5's are 24lbs. each. However, I am also boosting 8lbs. of boost through my Vortech V1. It is my understanding that the more power/torque you have, the less and less important wheel weights are. For example, Comparing a '96 Mustang GT 5spd to a 2000 Civic Si 5spd; while the Mustang would probubly just edge out the civic in the quarter mile, it has a lot more HP and like 160lb-ft more torque. Wheel weight would have significantly less impact on the mustang then the civic, right?

Soul Fly Mar 11, 2003 05:53 PM

Sprint...I know you didnt ban me. But I can tell that you think I'm a postwhore dumbsh!t. But I figure, if you're doin all dyno comparisons...why not include the VG?

Becuase the VG is significantly slower then the VE, and VQ's. The main point of Steve's comparisons was to try to calm the debates about which is faster/better then which; and in that case, the VG gets owned badly by all.

Like everything the more of something you have (torque in this case) the less percentage loss you end up with overall (due to the wheel weight). That's why heavy wheels kill Civics and don't affect us as much. Also, heavier wheels on high power cars aren't always a bad thing because usually they have wider tires to get the power to the ground. Thus, as with everything the article is a generalization that doesn't and can't really take every variable into consideration.

My only observation is that aerodynamics were left out of the comparison. Surely someone has access to a wind tunnel.

Steve, very nice writeup!

Thanks for taking the 15 minutes out of your day to make that contribution to our our community. ;)

Could you please solve the rest of the worlds debates and problems by Friday? Then you would be SUPER  !!

dwapenyi Mar 11, 2003 07:38 PM

NICE

After reading that article, those SSR competions in 17" weighing in at 13 lbs each are looking much much much much more attractive despite their higher price. Especially to the 5th gen 17 OEM guys.

I was always one not to spend more than $150 per rim on wheels. I think I'm gonna spend more now:)

nice informative writeup steve

not mine 260k and seems more reliable than the newer ones, I never had to replace a maf, or hardly anything for that matter;)

I will take you out on the twisties:)

Give me time and I will have you on the flats...

I know it will never stop, it is fun...cause, I know what is up, I could afford a newer max, but prefer my 3rd gen, just more fun and I have driven many different max's.
