Just cause your '89 Mazda has a 3.0L V6, doesn't mean it's going to sound the same as the Maxima. How many cams? How many valves? What's the firing order?

fierostetz Mar 19, 2003 10:57 AM

having owned a few mazdas (a 323, 626, and a 929) DON"T DO IT the mazda 3l engine sounds like crap through loud exhaust, like a gokart with a hole in the muffler

929s are SOHC and firing order is the same as the Maxima, but I've never heard that cam type or the firing order has that much affect on sound. Bore and stroke have a much more pronounced effect. More stroke makes for a deeper sound. A Mazda 929 has 3.54" bore and a 3.05" stroke (just happen to have my old 929 FSM in my office). Anybody know what the VQ bore and stroke is?

By the way, I really loved my 88 929, except for the timing belt. Rear wheel drive made up for that, though. But a lot heavier and only auto transmission = slow.

I'd like to know what the Maxima's bore/stroke is too. I am pretty sure the VQ's bore/stroke is different then the VE/VG's.

Apexi N1 with no resonator, and custom B pipe.

I just remembered I had my Maxima FSM in my car. Turns out the VQ bore and stroke is 3.66 x 2.886 Pretty oversquare. That would explain the fairly high rev capability.

So it's going to have a slightly deeper sound to it then the Mazda?

No, the 929 has the longer stroke, it's going to have the deeper sound. But not by much since we're only talking about a 6% difference.

Yeah, it's not even enough to increase the liters by even .1, so you probubly couldn't tell the difference in deepness (aka the setup you have will be the judge). Is that correct?

Yes, I'd say so.

My engine is SOHC 18 valve:( , alot of you guys seem to be running Apexi N1's ??? you think tht would sound alright on my car ?? which N1 ??? 115mm tip or the 90mm tip ???

I'm running a Warpspeed Y-pipe into a 2.5" catback with a 22" glasspack, into a flowmasters camaro style "crossflow" 80-series muffler into dual exhausts. (pipes) It sounds a lot different then 1FSTMAX's exhaust system. If you want to keep it easy and simple, get a single 40-series flowmasters muffler. If you are planning on a full exhaust, make sure to put a turbo tube or glasspack resonator in the b-pipe or it will get really loud.

1FSTMAX Mar 19, 2003 02:39 PM

Actually my exhaust sound very mellow, and it's not that loud. Under full acceleration my intake drowns out my exhaust. The only reason it sounds that way on the video's, because the camera is really close to the muffler. I chose the N1 becuase I always liked the canister look and the sound. If you are going to get a Apexi N1 make sure get a real one, not a fake ebay one.

Infiniti G Mar 19, 2003 02:44 PM

which N1 do you have ??? the bigger one (115mm) or the smaller one(90mm)

I have the NA which is 90mm, I believe that the 115 is for turbo engines.

Infiniti G Mar 19, 2003 02:51 PM

I dont have a Y pipe, the 2 manifolds join before the down pipe and then it flows into the cat then down into a smaller muffler (resonator), over the axle an into a RV sized muffler. If I were to change the set up I think I just want to bolt on the rear section and leave the resonator. What would you do ?? Should I change the whole set up from the cat back with 2.5" piping then get rid of the resonator and have the pipe go under the rear axle in to a N1 ?? I want power gains in the low and mid, not the top cause I dont plan on ripping around and staying around 6000 rpm. I want something like this but not loud, possible ????

skuccio's max Mar 19, 2003 06:29 PM

what about the <$300 mufflers

Would putting 100-150 down on a generic muffler be worth it? I don't wanna have that buzzing bee sound, but I hate how quiet my exhaust is and want a deeper sound w/o the GReddy or HKS price tag.

Do you want an import-style fart canaster that will give you a low mellow monotone bummmmmm? Ebay.

Do you want a slim hidden style muffler that will give you a unique raw, hollower rumble with more bark? Flowmasters. Get a 40 series muffler on ebay for ~$55.

I guess everyone here likes to sport bummmmming fart cans. :gotme:

I jus recently removed the large RV sized muffler and Im only running the smaller muffler (resonator) an WOW, it sounds deep and freed up proly 10-12 HP (my car is alot faster) all I plan on doing now is putting a pipe in place of the muffler and finishing of with a resonated tip to quiet some of the resonance

ivelweyz Jun 12, 2003 03:09 PM

more like 1 or 2 hp since mufflers have no effect on a car's power rating...

Infiniti G Jun 12, 2003 05:27 PM

not when you have 2 set of mufflers and how would 1 or 2 HP make my car way faster ?

MaximaRider Jun 12, 2003 08:39 PM

Greddy SP full catback with Cattman SS Ypipe and it sounds PrrrrrrrrrFect... :-)

Capital15 Jun 13, 2003 01:50 PM

Apexi World Sport catback with Stillen Y..sounds deep..sounds just right;)

CaLSoNiC Jun 13, 2003 02:33 PM

I just got a $50 muffler off ebay and a 2.25" non-resonated b-pipe and it deep. More of a vhrooooooo. hard to explain in words, but its nothing like a civic.

BlueC Jun 13, 2003 02:42 PM

Anyone know the diameter of the Budget Bpipe? I thought it was 2.5", but im not exactly sure.

eh, how would 2 mufflers give you more gain when one free-flowing one is all you need?

mufflers don't add mad HP, 1-3 at most

Infiniti G Jun 13, 2003 06:03 PM

my car has 2 stock mufflers, I deleted the biggest one and Im currently gonna put a tailpipe in its place. When that is done I would like to replace the 1 smaller stock one with a more free flowing unit but dont know what to use, Im concerened with back pressure and not having enough.

the Lexus LS400 has a somewhat similar set up and with removing 2 of the 4 stock mufflers it gained about 12 HP to the wheels on a dyno, i dont see why doing the same thing on my car would free up at least 6-8 HP it sure feels like it
