A couple of weeks ago my battery was dead one morning. I jumped it off, drove it around for a couple of weeks, and this morning, she turned over a couple times, and was dead again.

I'm suspecting the alternator here, but just wondered if it's worthwhile to get a new battery while I'm at it.

I'm on about ~40k miles on my '97.....

Well I had to replace my battery about two weeks ago, this is after a little over two years. I ended up replacing it with another Optima battery... this time a red top. I have a yellow top and a red top. The yellow top is amazing though... it was initially in the crx. It had not been charged(car running) for well over two weeks. I've started the car with it for atleast 50-75 times trying to figure out what was wrong with the crx...

well when I took a meter to it, only had 11.75 volts or less. put it in the maxima (swaped the red top to the crx thinking it may be the battery, but it wasn't) with less than 12 volts, cranked up the maxima in first try. :)

Optimas are costly but worth it... plus wiht 800+ CCA, you shouldn't ever have a problem starting the car.

Mine lasted a little over a year ->

I did put over 40K miles on the car =) I bought a Optima orange top battery two weeks ago. If you decide to go with Optima, the battery is too short for the OEM J hooks. You either have to raise the battery up by using a platform or get new battery hold down J-hooks. The J-hooks are the two J thingy with threads and the nuts on it. There are not enough threads so the nuts won't go down for enough for a shorter battery. You can pick some new 6" ones at Trak Auto that has the more threads so that the nuts can go down far enough to hold the battery snug. That's what I did.

110,000 miles

Yup. I changed it just because,

WOW, 110,0000 miles, and I thought I was doing good. I have 58,000 miles on mine and can tell that I might have to replace it within a year and a half. Not too bad considering the cold weather here in Colorado.

Jambo, both maxes i've owned needed replacement

batteries at about 3.5 years or 42 months.

I don't think it's your alternator, but could be.

maximax Jan 17, 2001 07:46 AM

Mine lasted for almost 6 years, 65K miles..
Still working quite fine but last december it died and i missed my exam so i believe it is time to change it.

Albertt Jan 17, 2001 08:00 AM

My OEM battery has been in there for 4 years, 88K miles >>

It'll probably die soon...I had to replace my alternator a few months ago. When the battery dies, I'm getting an Optima.

My OEM battery died after 3 and a half years. Actually it didn't die, but when I took it into my mechanic for the 45k service, he showed me that my battery failed the load test.

Johnny Jan 17, 2001 12:39 PM

if the dealer didn't pull my leg

about 31 months. I got the spare in my trunk (needs to be charged up). But my car sat for one week at the airport and she started right up without problem. Even the windows were iced shut. Dealer said it failed the load test.

I have a '97. My battery went out in October last year.

same here!

mAdD MAX Jan 17, 2001 01:16 PM

My battery only lasted 18 months (~26K kms) before needing replacement.

And they advertised that the GLEtrim gets a heavy-duty battery compared to GXE too...heh.

Matt93SE Jan 17, 2001 01:28 PM

My OEM battery lasted me about 1 week after I signed the papers on the car in august of '97 (so the oem battery lasted about 4 years). After that, I dumped in an Interstate battery, and I've sent it through hell and back over the last 2.5 years.

I have 113,000 on my stock battery in my 95. It is still fine, but just bought a new one the other day (better safe than sorry) but have not put it in yet...

kratz74 Jan 17, 2001 08:09 PM

Similar to MaxSpeed5, my OEM battery was still going great on my 95 with 100K. I changed it only b/c my wife began driving it occasionally 200 miles one way on rural roads with my infant son. For $45, it's cheap insurance...

Chebosto Jan 17, 2001 08:44 PM

my stock battery was not dying on me, but started leaking, so i changed it at 35,000 miles.. i wussed out and got the cheapo battery at costco.

my dad's GLE has over 78000 miles on his stock battery...

The_quorum Jan 17, 2001 08:47 PM

I've got a '98

had for almost 2 years...80k miles. Same old battery, Though I've had to fill it's resevoir up on a couple occasions.

Washington DC Maxima Jan 18, 2001 04:39 AM

Two 1/2 years. n/m

..

JJW95SC Jan 18, 2001 05:33 AM

I just put a new one in my 91GXE which I bought in '95. Assuming that the dealer had put a new one in it before I bought it, I got more than 5 years out of it.

I put a new one in my '95, before I realized it was the starter that went bad at around 60k miles.

Seems to me that 40k on a '97 is too soon for it to die.

Your Alternator

Albert--
what's up man? Happy new year!!
when did you get your alternator replaced, and where?

I am not having any of these problems yet (knock on wood)--but how did you know that it was your alternator?

thanks--

Brian :)

My OEM battery on 95 SE with 81K miles just died on me last week. I put in Costco battery with 875CCA.

The best I see was OEM battery on my cousin 91 SE-R that just died on Oct 2000. That is 9 years old.

stock battery

i had to replace mine after 2 years. because i let 1 cell go low. if i had kept an eye on the electrolite levels it would have lasted longer. i like the optimas also, i also like the small size gel batteries.

turbolaw99 Jan 20, 2001 06:15 AM

30 months on my '95, and 24 on my mom's '98. The dealer charged $15 for an OEM when prorating for a new one.

KL99SEA Jan 20, 2001 06:24 AM

1.5 years......replaced my 99se battery about 6 months ago.
"F"ing Nissan dealer said one year free then prorate and total would be like 75 dollars. I said "Bite Me" and replaced it myself.

Maximum Velocity Jan 20, 2001 09:36 AM

I drove the car home from the dealership and when I tried to start it later on in the day, it wouldn't start. So I guess you could say it lasted 30 minutes. The dealer brought another one to my house, but I couldn't believe that it died.

short trips

question for everyone--

is it true that when your car does a lot of short trips? which mine does--usually in the morning--1.5 miles and then in the evening for 1 mile--and that is about all the driving the car sees...Does that hurt the battery or the alternator, since there isn't a lot of recharging? is that the theory of it?

can anyone explain a little of this?
