Used Clay Bar on my car!! damn it's smooth!

Wow... first time i've ever used this stuff!!! Incredible how smooth
it made my paint feel... after i was done last night, I had 3 friends just touching my car, amazed at how smooth it made the paint! :) lol

Totally recommend it!!! :)

MAXimumHP May 5, 2003 09:44 AM

Cool! I plan to do this for the first time myself this coming weekend.

RxMan May 5, 2003 09:50 AM

OK! I give up. What is a clay bar? I keep hearing it but have never seen one. Search didn't help either.

Thanks

It's literally a bar of clay. Specially designed to remove crap from the surface of your paint. I've heard from many people that the surface is as smooth as glass after using it. Sounds like you basically slide it across your paint using a lubrication agent (comes with bar) and that's it. You can buy them at almost any auto parts store now.

Yep, I did mine a couple weekends ago. It's a little 2" square bar of clay that grabs all the contaminants on your car. It's a must ever so often.

yup that's exactly it... it's so wicked how smooth it is... I can put something on my car and it'll slide right off! :) totally recommend it!! hehe

The only thing left to do to my car now is to wax it... :)

And yeah, you can buy the clay bar practically anywhere.

do it.. do it now!!! :)

oh, I believe you have to remove all wax before you do the clay bar...
don't quote me on it, i'm just pretty sure you have to.

Chron!cRAGE May 5, 2003 10:54 AM

Can I buy any chunk of clay at the art store and it will work the same way? Mother's clay bar is a little more than what I want to spend.

Chinkzilla May 5, 2003 11:21 AM

no you do not have to remove all the wax, but it's not a bad idea. Use dawn dishwashing liquid.

no, you can not just use any clay, you have to use automotive clay. regular clay will f** up your paint

Just get the mothers.. it's worth it... but be prepared to spend half a day detailing your car (wash, clay, polish, wax, inside, blah blah blah).. but at the end it looks sweet.. just did mine yesterday, too bad today it's covered in pollen already.. damn you springtime

Gotrice4 May 5, 2003 06:25 PM

That's kinda funny, maxima enthusiast and isn't willing to spend like $12 for Mother's or Meguier's Clay bar system... I mean I understand money can be tight(hey, i'm in college) but you gotta spend a little sometimes to get results....

RapidMax May 5, 2003 07:01 PM

Exactly how do you go about removing all the wax with dishwashing soap. How much are you supposed to use and does it matter what kind? Sorry for the dumb question but I don't want to accidentally take my paint off or something

I just laid down 2 coats of wax on fri and sat. When I used the clay bar, I was so surprized how much dirt cam off. You can feel the clay bar take the dirt off.

boo May 5, 2003 07:58 PM

I started at 8:30am on Sat morning. Gave the car a good wash with dish washing soap to remove any wax residue. Next about 1 hour with the Clay Magic clay bar. Washed it again to remove the spray residue from claying the car.
I didn't notice the smoothness initially but you could
Definitely see the dirt/contaminant being picked up. Next, 1 hr with 3m swirl mark remover (hard to take off  ). I usually use Zaino but I decided to try Klasse All in One and the Klasse Glaze next. The Zaino works great but since my wife keeps her car in the garage mines outside and the Zaino picks up way too much dust.
Took another 2 hrs for the Klasse products. All in one is easy on/off but the Glaze was tough to remove. Finished around 3pm(probably won't spend this much time again!!!)

Overall the car is the smoothest I've ever felt. The wax/glaze looks good(not as deep as Zaino but still very nice). I want to
see how long it can keep clean compared to the Zaino. I've heard of adding another layer of carnauba wax on top of the Klasse to add a deeper shine but I was way too tired after all that work - but it was worth it!!!!!
:D

I'm a student as well but they charge 30 bucks canadian here for mother's clay bar...which I think is a tad bit pricey. I opened the box and the clay bar is small being the size of a deck of cards. At least now I know that regular clay will not yield the same results so I may be forced to get the mother's bar...just wondering what other options I have that's all.

Does the clay bar leave any swirls or fine scratches?
Never used one. I'll have to give it a try.

Wonder what idjit first thought "Duh, I think I'll rub some clay on my car and see what happens?" Probably a decendant of the indian who rubbed two sticks together real fast and caught his loin cloth on fire.

Naw shouldn't cause any swirl marks actually. Unless the bar picked up a little rock or something...

oh and for the bar size, if i remember correctly.... It can do 3 cars. :D

Kinda fuzzy picture, but you can see you got some good reflections going on there. Mine should look like that next week :D, providing weather holds out.

Yeah, that Clay Magic is awesome stuff. You get it at Autozone or PepBoys for $10. Cut it into thirds, and then use one piece at a time. Lube the surface and use a back and forth motion. Its amazing how much stuff the bar picks up, especially on the lower parts of your door. I then applied Meg's #7 show car glaze and topped with two coats of carnuba. Six hours later my 97 SE looked brand new.
