Car won't start after it ran out of fuel in the drive way.

did you put some fuel in the intake manifold . kind of like primeming a carburator. spelling is off i think:goofy:
your fuel lines are dry thats why it wont start wright a way . prime it a little and it will start .not to much fuel . |
If your driveway is on an incline, the sump area in your tank has run dry. Put in "a few" gallons and she'll start.

if the driveway theory is correct...maybe you can just hit the shift lock button and move it down to neutral and move it to flat ground.

i THINK i ran out of gas once in my 96. the car turned off while i was driving so i coasted into my neighborhood and got it started and drove to my house. i was working at the time delivering pizza (thankfully i was deliverying to my neighborhood at the time) so i didnt mess with my car until the next day. put some gas in it and it still didnt start. somehow, someway, i ended up needing a new battery. not sure why but the car started right up with a new battery. might want to look into that.

Your tank may have been dirty therefor your fuel line or fuel filter has clogged up. I would check the fuel filter and change it if you find dirt in it. Usualy the fuel tank has dirty on the bottom of it and when you run out of gas some may be sucked in to your line. Another thing is check your fuel pump. You should hear it when you turn the key. You would know if it's your battery by the way the starter acts when you turn your key. If your starter is making good turns of the engine then it's not battery!

that happend to my friend in his truck.. we added a bunch of fuel but no go.. apparantly his fuel pump 'overheated'.. We got it towed to the house... at 7am in the morning that bastard started right up :) give it some time if u cranked it alot

Yeah it does, but I'm starting to think that the fuel filter clogged up as Max7 said previously. I'm gonna replace it tomorrow when I get home. It needed to be replaced anyway.

I have tons of experience with this, since I've run every car I've ever owned out of gas... With fuel injected cars, all you have to do is put a gallon or two of gas in it, make sure its on a level surface, and turn the key to the on position but do not start it... Leave it that way for about 5 minutes while the fuel pump is pumping gas into the empty lines, then it should crank right up.

as he said above, but slightly different... 3rd gens will run the fuel pump for about 8-10 seconds after you turn the ignition on, until it builds up pressure in the system. I don't know if it's got a pressure switch or what on it, but it'll shut off until you start the car. Soooo, turn the ignition off and back on and let it sit 15 sec or so, then do it again.. do that several times and you should eventually get fuel back into the system.

probably not.. it wouldn't just suddenly not start after you ran it out of gas.. you would usually see other symptoms before that too.. hard starting, sluggish pedal, etc.

three possibilities;
1) Not enough gas in the tank - if the driveway is sloped then the gallon you put in there may be sloshed up against one side of the tank and the pickup is dry. Put in at least 5gal if you have to stay on the slope, or at least 2 gal and roll to level ground. Turn the key to EngineOn (listen for the fuel pump whirring for a couple of seconds) then off again, do this 5 times then try to start. 2) Pump overheated (designed to be cooled by the gasoline) and is dead - listen for the pump to whirr for a couple of seconds as you turn the key to EngineOn. 3) Something clogged (more likely the pickup filter int eh tank, not the filter under the hood). Spray TB cleaner into the manifold as a friend cranks the engine. If it starts/tries to start then it's a fuel delivery issue |
No luck guys. Still won't start. The fuel pump seems to be ok, but the battery is dieing slowly. I tried the on and off procedure with no luck. Guess I'm gonna have it towed somewhere.

This happened to me yesterday with my 95 Subaru Legacy SW. It backfired as I pulled into the station out of gas. . I Iput gas in and it started, i pulled into the road and it died at the first stop light. Wouldn't run unless you held foot on gas trailer and pumped and brake at the same time. It sat overnight and did the same thing when loading on a trailer this morning. Battery was dead when they were unloading it and after jumping it, the car ran fine. Mechanic said all he found was a dead battery. Could the battery going dead reset something? Would be something free to try if your having issues.
