HELP! Odometer possible rollback and Carfax didn't catch it!!!
While my tranny is being installed, I had the mechanic put in my gauges and gunmetal gauge rings. While he was in the dash, he and Louie (SLCI30t) found the cover over the odometer was missing. Both think this pretty much points to odometer rollback, which could possibly explain the tranny going out at 85K.
I got a Carfax report before buying the car, and it all checked out. Heres the section about the mileage: 9/02/96- 250 miles 4/11/00- 39,894 4/17/00- 39,900 5/11/00- 39,901 11/24/02- 78,513 Does anything catch anyones eye? Maybe the fact that they only drove it 7 miles in a month? How should I go this whole procedure with Carfax?   |
Carfax can't find all odometer rollbacks... It can only show you the mileage each time the car was registered, etc... So if there was a rollback, god only knows when... It's very possible the original owners rolled it back, since it looks like they only drove close to 10,000 miles a year... Although that's not exactly low or high mileage, they might have been driving it 30,000 miles a year then rolled it back, which would explain your tranny going out at what would be close to 200,000 miles by now. :(
By the way, I'm just making a guess... Bryan |

maybe the car was sitting at a dealership? it is possible you know..

I vote sitting at a dealership.

I'm gonna enlighten everyone about CARFAX . I work for CARMAX, not to be confused with CARFAX, and when we purchase cars from consumers, we use to use CARFAX as a source of making sure we buy car at a fair price. However, it has been known to have non reported information. As CARFAX is just a guide for consumers much like Kelly Blue Book is a guide, not an acurate one, but a guide nonetheless. Carmax not uses AUTOCHECK.com and a few other guides that are not accessable by consumers such as a insurance claim check service to varify a cars true condition. Nothing is 100% accurate, and Carfax should only be used as a guide, but if you see something on a carfax report that raises an eyebrow or two, follow your instinct and don't buy it, cause a car with a salvaged title or TMU (True Miles Unknown) has a lower value than the person is selling you the car for. Just my two cents.

Bryan 10/20/94 175,235 02/05/98 124,044 I bought it at 136K. At 167K, it started to give me lots of problems, and I was too tired of bringing it to the shop. I decided to let it go and bought the max ... bastards Carfax never said anything about possible odometer rollback. Yup, use your own judgement. |
