i'd hate to see HID's go, but honestly speaking, do you guys really think this will help?

Wisky97SE Jul 31, 2003 10:52 PM

As much as I would love to put HID's on my max, and how much better they would light up the road . . . the current housing is not meant for HID headlights, and although it may look good from your driver's seat, it is annoying to other drivers on the road - whenever I see a non-factory HID equiped car, It is so obnoxiously bright, looks as if they have their highbeams on. Anyone else agree?

Is there any petition to ban the use of rear fog lamps in the US? Hopefully one day those silly volvos, porsches, audis, jaguars, mbenzes will not be equipped with them in the US. BMW is the only euro car mfg that doesn't put fake stuff on the US cars.

Albertt Aug 1, 2003 04:41 AM

How do we define quality here? Just because some kid with too much of his parents money in his wallet lays out $800 for a kit...doesn't make that kit "quality".

And Frank, if you've ever driven in the severe fog, rain or snow, you'd learn to appreciate those cars equipped with rear foglamps (those would be the only cars you can see before you are 2 meters away from their bumper). There's a reason why the SAE mandates their usage. You may ask, "How often do I drive in the fog?". Well, I'm sure you've heard of Murphy's Law...and remember: "Chance favors the prepared mind". Also, BMWs and Vws are equipped with rear foglamp systems, they are simply "unwired" in the models sold here.

Look at the Catz HID system and you'll know what I mean by quality.

I gotta run to a meeting now but do a search online.

Ok, the parts look to be of quality. But the only picture that shows the output on the road lacks detail. Is there a sharp beam cutoff? Anyone have some pictures of the beam pattern shown on a wall?
http://www.fet-japan.co.jp/catz/system_img/ph_spw.jpg

Also, what about beam leveling and lens washing. As some of you may know, in Europe, any car equipped with HIDs must have autoleveling and lens washers.

Misaligned HID's are a problem. Banning the complete sale of them will not solve it. Those who want them aftermarket bad enough will find them, and most likely install them incorrectly themselves, since no shop will be willing to help. By allowing the sale, quality will remain higher, and in theory installs will be cleaner, and aligned correctly.

Check out this site: http://www.liteswap.com/Merchant2/me...y_Code=DualHID

These people are serious about HID's and they even have a forum.

Here's a pic of the cutoff,

Plus there are many other pics to show how the Catz system looks on the road.

Went to the site...I'm happy that it provides for a high beam. From this picture
http://www.liteswap.com/Merchant2/gr.../9004/9004.jpg
it looks as though the design of the 9004 replacement is of good quality.

http://www.liteswap.com/Merchant2/gr...1/compare2.jpg
None of the other photos specify the bulb type. The pattern in this picture is not of a 9004 replacement. If you look closely, notice the small square extentions on the top of the cutoff...this beam pattern was produced by a projector lamp, ruling it out as a 9004.

Deezo, I'm not trying to give you or any of the other guys a hard time here. I'm playing devil's advocate a bit. I'm just not a big fan of mods that are not well designed. Why do you think my car is near stock?

i would say it might be a 9006 set up.

Maybe...maybe H1 or H7. If you look at the pic where it still has the halogen bulb installed, notice the sharp cutoff. That is not a beam pattern produced by an H4 bulb, so it must be a projector type lamp.

i say start with the honda's that have the japanese conversions first... RHD light beams are bad... i doubt this banning of hid's will ever take place.

The 9004's come this way too.

Albertt: I know how particular you are about HID's. I actually sold my Hanabi kit to get a good Hi/Lo kit. I did purchase this kit because of the quality. I saw this kit up close being that my coworker bought this kit last month on a Sentra board. It is top notch.

What do you mean "learn to appreciate?" Let's not be elitist, let's be honest. Fog lamps on most vehicles in the US are decorations (the extreme would be Sunfire, Grand Am, etc.). If I decided to wire my Maxima so that the left tail lamp looked like I was braking, installed higher wattage bulbs, and drove around all the time with the rear left lit up redder than a brake lamp, people would be annoyed. Just because it's an Audi, MB, Jaguar, Rover, doesn't make it ok. Like I said, these silly things are not on BMW's, because they do not put unnecessary things on their USA cars (like a dual exhaust with a V6 and only one cat). I know you're just playing devil's advocate so that's cool. :D

I'm in no way being elitist. My opinion is that all cars, regardless of price and brand name should have rear foglamps. Of course, there will be people who misuse them, by driving with them on when there is no fog, but that does not mean we shouldn't have them. Should we now ban high beams on cars just because a few dumasses leave their highbeams on all the time?
