Gas used at idle

If i am sitting in my car playing XBOX for an hour with the car on at idle w/o A/c (650rpms), how much gas to you think I am using?

why not leave it in acc?

DerekJ212 09-30-2003 10:52 PM

Not enough power....the XBOX takes up a lot of power i have been told, and I havent been able to get everything to work correctly in ACC mode. Its a DieHard battery...perhaps I am doing something wrong? I dont have any money to spend but I am being told leaving a car at idle that long is very bad for it...any input?

just make sure your windows are up and your vents are closed to prevent the carbon monoxide to get into your car. It's odorless so you won't even smell it.

This is always done outdoors, or else I would just walk into my house and play on my TV. More wondering about solutions to having car on and its effects on the car with it on.

your paying for the gas, so do it if you want, personally I would probably play 30mins, then run the car for 5 or so to be on the safe side. All depends on how much you drive, and what other accessories you have on while your driving.

A decent set of subs would use more power than a console/tv combo. Best bet if your worried, invest in a battery with more cold cranking amps (CCA's)

I tested 2 liters per hour on a caravan with a 3,3l V6 engine, no air , no accessories on, , no load on the alternator.

it's not "very bad" for it, it just wastes gas. It'd be cheaper in the long run to get a bigger/better battery. You say you don't have any money but you're throwing away $$ every time you do this. From now on, every time you want to do this, throw $2 or $3 in a cup and save it...pretty soon you'll have the money for a new battery and won't waste gas like thta any more.

There's something just a little bit pathetic about guys who have to play video games in their car as well as back at home.

It is BAD to leave a car in idle for an extended period of time. Why do you think the manual says not too leave the car idling for long? It wastes gas and who knows what else...

Excuse me? I have 20 minutes between my AP classes at school and 6-7 miles of running for Cross Country and 20-30mins of Halo is bad? I dont have XBOX at home, just in the car...so if you wont even help answer the question, dont post.

I used to play my buddy's Gamecube in my car after he bought the portable monitor for it. I kept the car in ACC and never noticed anything wrong with my battery. I did this more than a few times, but not a "lot" because the monitor stopped working 1 day and he never got it fixed. So, I'd say take the chance and use the ACC setting instead of leaving the car on. You should probably invest in a spare battery though if you think the Xbox uses a lot of power, because it'd suck if you couldn't start your car after a game of Halo that ran too long.

Rewired the invertor and now its all good on ACC. Thanks, how long should i expect it to last with Xbox, fully amped system and screen on a stock replacement battery?

What do you expect from microsoft? He'll probably get the blue, I mean green, screen of death sooner or later...

- Wouldn't having the car runing at idle back up the exhaust fumes all the way to the chamber?? You're not moving, so the exhaust is almost stationary in the pipe and out of the exhaust.
This would "sufficate" the engine eventually!!!

MrGone 10-01-2003 09:47 PM

Derek, just leave your subs off, and play the audio at a normal level and you should be fine. If anything just carry a AAA card or some jumper cables as a precaution.

Boznian- Sorry bud, but thats not the way cars work. Yes it is possiable for the exhaust fumes to 'surround' the car, but that also depends on weather conditions, and the nature of the exhaust will want to push it away from the back, but it can still circle around to the front easily, you just have to be careful. Also think of the engine as a big air pump, its designed to push the exhaust out of the pipe. I've crossed rivers with the exhaust pipe submerged, no biggy, just dont turn the engine off.
