Car won't start - battery, starter, or electrical drain?
 

Symptoms - for the last few days the car has been cranking slower and slower. It does fire up very quickly though, doesn't take many cranks at all. Today it just won't start, no cranking, no click, no nothing. I'm trying to find my voltmeter, but the battery is very new (couple of months for those who don't remember the explosion incident). The accessories all work.

Thoughts?

could still be a bad battery. get the voltmeter and confirm you are getting 11.xx when the car is off and a high 13 or mid 14 volts when the car is started.

Yea it most likely is the battery. Your battery might be able to turn on all the lights and play the radio and everything but it wont have the juice to crank up the starter.

Your battery isnt holding a charge which could be because the battery itself went bad or your alternator isnt charging it back up.

Check up with the meter like jeff said and see what happens.

Update: I still can't find a voltmeter around the house, but the car will not jump start.

are the lights dim when their on? have you checked the starter/ignition relay? it sounds like you have an open in the ignition circuit. find a wiring diagram and start at the grounds then work your way up to the positive terminal.

No, all the accessories seem to be working at full power.

It does sound like your starter or ignition relay. If your accessories are working, then it's not your battery or charging system. I know when my battery went bad, the car would try to turn over, but not quite have enough juice to start. But the time the ground to my starter was unhooked, the accessories were fine, but no click or anything from the starter.

Had this EXACT same problem, everything worked but car would not start, didn't even sound like it was trying. It turned out to be the starter, so took it out and into an auto-electrician who replaced the bearings, brushes and re-greased it and then I put it back in again. Works like a new one now :)

Turns out to be the starter. $250 plus $60 labor and I'm back on the road with a brand new OEM part. Naturally, not from the dealer. Satisfied with the deal, I suppose.
