OBD-II code reader - $39.99

Harbor Freight has their LAUNCH OBD-II code reader on sale for $39.99. According to the online manual, it can display up to four codes and will also reset the ECU. I have no idea if it's any good nor if it works as advertised, but for that price it may be worth a try.

probably this one does not give you the error message but just the code. you will have to refer to FSM to get the description.

I would spend a little bit more on the one to the lap-top PC. It has a lot more feature and it is able to obtain some real-time reading of your sensors.

Yup, just the code. But the "manual" that comes with it does have the descriptions as do numerous sites on the web. I have the Harrison OBDScan tool BTW and love it. Just figured some people who don't care about all the bells and whistles and want to save $100 might be interested.

Good find, I might just buy this with all the CEL codes my car throws at me.

DAVE Sz 04-27-2004 08:02 PM

5th gen guys can use this but who would buy it for a 4th gen?

Chinkzilla 04-28-2004 03:53 AM

I can't figure out if this is freeware http://www.obd-2.com/index.html

and if it is all I need is a laptop and RS-232 cable?

DAVE Sz 04-28-2004 08:05 AM

Looks free to me.

$122 ain't free. The software may be free to download, but
without corresponding scanning hardware, the J1962 connector
to connect to your OBD-II port on the car, etc. it's worthless.

swapmeetlouie 04-28-2004 01:14 PM

couldnt you get the hardware somewhere else?

Not to sound ignorant, but why can't 4th gen guys use it?

Sorry, but it doesn't work that way. The software is written to work with a specific hardware design. For example, I can't download and use this software with my Harrison OBDScan hardware.

It should work fine with 4th Gen models, including those made in '95 since I believe they conform to the OBD-II standard. But he probably means you can simply use the diagnostic mode on the ECU to pull info -- no real need to use a scan tool at all (other than it's a little more convenient).

I'm not sure but I though 95's were obd1 :(

BlueC 04-29-2004 03:38 PM

99s have a sh!tty diagnostic screw.... I already broke mine.... This would be useful to us.

I'm pretty sure Nissan started using OBD-II in 1995, one year before the Federal mandate, but I could be wrong (it's happened before :) )

1992, i believe. the VEs...well at least mine (94), is an O/2.

MrGone 04-30-2004 03:27 AM

My 92/93 maximas are/were not OBD-II compliant. Thats ok though, Mine never tells me anything :) (yes, my CEL light works, it just never goes off :D)

MaxPerformanceSE 04-30-2004 07:31 AM

My 1991 Stanza has OBD-II. This is a not a typo. Maybe it was a guinea pig.

Anyways I bought the scanner from Harbor Freight. It is something extra to put in the glove box. lol

That's true...my '95 Max was OBD II and I bought it in 1994 and was also built in '94.
