Re: but ...

Thats probably just road tar. Maybe only the rear wheels get that on them because the front wheels kick the tar up onto them

Just for fun, you might want to check your CV joints. There is a slight chance that your clamp may have come just a little loose and let some grease leak out.

it's most likely a combination of brake dust and road grime. the roas gunk causes greasy spots on the wheel, then the brake dust gets stuck in it, causing the black spots..
and when brake dust gets caked on like that, it's nearly impossible to remove.
I've ruined a set of rims before because I went a winter without cleaning them. now I can't get the spots off, no matter what chemicals I use. I've even tried to scrape them off with my fingernail, but it only scratches the clear coat on the rims.
best advice is to clean them once a week- even if it's just go to the car wash and powerspray them.. it's better than nothing.

the best stuff to use is eagle one all wheel cleaner, its an acid so u gotta be careful but if used right its awsome and leaves my wheels nice and shniy

Matt is correct. Basically, it's a combination of road grime and brake dust. Personally, I use Wheel Magic (The green stuff) and I have a small wash mitt I use to get in between the spokes of my rims. Also, I have a wheel polish that I apply to them.

its a pain in the a$$ to get off if you leave it on for awhile. it bakes onto the rim

I was ...

considering buying the Eagle One ... but the Poison symbol on the label kinda deterred me ... I instead went 4 the Meguire Cold Glass which sux!

How careful do u have 2 b? Will it burn the rim?

I would stay away from using anything harsh on your rims....I just use regular car soap and water.... It is tough, but a good scrubbing should get rid of that brake dust and grime. Also, you should wax your rims...it makes getting the crap off a lot easier.

no it wont burn, it you spray it be careful not to get it on your eyes it will burn and if you inhale it it will burn a little but that dosent happen unless you put your face next to the wheel in 20 mph wind, this stuff took off 10 years of road grim on my maxima and ive never seen the wheels get this clean jsut follow directions, make sure the wheel is wet and cold and you dont even have to let it sit for more then 30 seconds and let me tell you all that crap just wipes off, i mean if you have a new car you probably wouldent need it but for an older car its different, especially if the person who had teh car before you did not clean the wheels every week
