wheel hop

well, wheel hop i think is when the tires try to spin but end up gripping too much and the suspension starts bouncing up and down. it is very hard on your axles and transmission. as for a cure, i do not know. we were looking for one when my buddy had his Spec V because it was so terrible in that car, but we couldn't find anything.

so its something that occurs usually when accelerating? I'm assuming it only occurs with 5 speeds?
So if I try to interpret your explaination into a cenario, wheel hop would occur say when accelerating and you come off the clutch too early and so more power suddenly is sent to the wheel, and causes a hop?

Wheel hop can happen on automatic cars.
Here are some interesting reads http://tsiart02.tripod.com/WHR.htm
According to this link http://www.100megsfree4.com/dictiona....htm#WhaleTail wheel hop is defined as - A hopping action of the rear (it should be drive wheel or wheels) wheels during heavy acceleration. Traction is lost and regained in rapid cycles after power is applied to the rear wheels. It indicates a need for different tires, better shock absorbers, better springs, better axle control, different driving technique, or all of the above. The British term is "wheel patter"

Wheel hop is cause by front and back movement of the wheels and our drivetrain. Changing the suspension won't solve the problem.

So bad motor mount would cause wheel hop? when you shift (5speed people) and that sudden loss in momentum would give a little hop since the motor would swing back some?
thanks for the responces, now that I understand what wheel hop is I know that, I am not experiencing it, but I have heard the term a lot recently and wanted to get clarification of it.

Well, bad mounts and whatnot aren't necessarily the cause, but they're the things you want to address if you're trying to eliminate it. The factory mounts are good enough for everyday driving, but aren't good enough for the substantial abuse an enthusiast deals out.

WTF is an engine damper?
Yes, making the motor and tranny mounts harder will limit the movement of the engine, and thus reduce wheel hop. After I put in my PR motor mounts, wheel hop went away pretty much permanently. The only time I can get wheel hop now is by giving it gas in the rain in first gear, and even then it's not that bad. New shocks won't help. You can do the eraser mod to your mounts, or fill them with poly, or find some PR mounts.

sorry to bring this thread back from the dead but when wheel hop occurs does it feel like someone is banging the crap out of the bottom of your car and is really loud? b/c i believe i have this problem and was wondering where it was coming from. i have the symptoms that everyone is talking about in this thread, 1st gear and punching it, in the rain. etc.

what kind of tires are you running/tire pressure?
what is your suspension setup?
there are a bunch of different variables that contribute to this. the easy way to prevent it is to go easy on the throttle in low traction situations
give us some more setup info and we can probably help you more.

I get it every now and then at the track in my 240sx when i dont launch it right and spin a little then get to a sticky section of the track and it starts wheel hopping.
