Ward's 10 Best Engines

I was reading the Wiki about Wards and had a question. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ward's_10_Best_Engines

Ward's editors evaluate each engine according to a number of objective and subjective criteria in everyday driving situations – there is no instrumented testing.
What's it mean by "no instrumented testing"? And if an engine is used in different applications, how can I find out which application was an engine rated on?

wow! the VQ has been on that list every single year since 1995. thats crazy.. makes me even more proud about my decision in buying a maxima.

does Wards have a website or something?

this last year the VQ they choose was in the 2007 G35 sedan, the VQ35HR

thurznite; if you've ever read one of the Ward's 10 Best write-ups, I suggest you do. It has alot of neat tidbits in there, plus if you look at the breakdown area where they list a summary of the engine type and rated performance, it will also show what application they evaluated the engine in. I believe since 03, the VQ35DE has been compared from the G35 Sedan. Just this year they did the same thing but since it was the HR variant, they point that out.

Where do I find the writeups?

I think the VQ was a great motor back in 1994--190 HP at the time, and 27 mpg, wow! But today, you can see it evolved into 306 and what 330 in the G37? But the torque is weak and it lacks direct injection and has poor fuel economy...it needs some new motronics to be considered very good or great for the 2k8 model year imho.

I don't know about you, but I have been getting 29.4mpg for the last 2445.7 (I went out go look lol) miles, and that's with the occasional romping of a A4, A6 (well, that's not a romp, but a win) and honduhs, and going on on-ramps like an F1 race car coming out of a pitstop (After he can go fast)

This engine is pretty torque-y for me anyway, I don't know about you and the condition of your engine. Mine is running tip-top.....

here is a good article from the wards website giving credit to the 4th gen. maxima.http://wardsauto.com/reports/2007/te...ve_maxima_g35/

Maxim(a)SerjVQ Aug 18, 2007 01:41 PM

Weak torque? I don't think so. . .maybe you're comparing bottom end to something with pushrods... like a V8. Granted, it doesn't have the MOST, but it should also be pointed out that even with honda's motors putting out better specs, by the end of the 1/4mi the VQ has won and it's still pulling surprisingly well. the new HR variant is made for more Revs which imo = more fun. The fuel econ hasn't changed mostly due to CVTs, and most people here, even on the 4AT can get better mpg than the sticker. heck, I used to get 32mpg running down a full tank on long trips. and I was averaging over 70mph.

A common claim is the VQ is underrated in it's efficiency.

interesting post, i never checked out Ward's site but I hear a lot about it. A lot auto manufacturer are catching up to Nissan

The VQ is DEFINITELY a quality engine with tons of torque, but doesnt handle boost like a 2JZ baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why would it? Iron block vs Aluminum. Built for boost vs. Built for NA only. What a retarded statement to make. :bonk:

HUH? I thought the VQ block was replaced to all alumium starting with the 4th Gen? I thought the VE was the last iron block?

And correct me if I'm wrong, but an inline six-cylinder can utiltize and mount a larger single turbo far easier than a V-6, which is more compatible with a smaller twin turbo setups (each turbo gets 3 cylinders). The only advantage of a V shaped block is the weight distribution. Bigger turbo, Bigger power.

Ever heard of a Toyota Supra? Yea, 2JZ. How many of those are boosted?:jeffy:

lol what, U just proved what mtrai760 said

lol.....First of all I never claimed to be an engine guru. This forum is an information gathering tool. I have long since sold my maxima but still troll this forum cuz I love maximas and suport this community still to this day. Instead of being childishly condescending, why dont you share some knowledge? I really don't mind being wrong and corrected, I learn know things every day.

BUT, posting :.orgy: is pretty :007:. Grow up dude.
