The reason I won't consider a 5 speed conversion........here is an alternative....
I like many of you am very interested in doing the conversion to a 5speed. CBR2 and HLOL5 (sp) sorry really made the conversion sound easy. I have talked to about 15 shops in the Atlanta area and only one would even consider doing it. He said it would atleast cost $3000.00
Transmission rebuilt $1500.00 w/ warranty Clutch and assembly plate $200 and other parts and labor.. so on an so forth. All the shops said the time they would spend on the conversion they could do 5 regular jobs the scenario one guy gave me 5 jobs @ $1200 = $6000.00 My conversion same time as 5 regular jobs $3000.......... do the math. I would love to mate the VQ with a manual tranny. But for that kind of money I could buy a second car such as a 87-89 300Z 5sp they are plentiful for under $3000 or a 86-89 Supra or GEN 2 RX7 Turbo 5 sp. I kind of favor the idea of owning a second car. Grazie, Pat:( :) |
That's why those of us mechanically inclined are trying to do it ourselves. MUCH cheaper.

tranny cost $500 .. you can get the labor done for $300
if you went to a nissan dealership to buy a 2002 maxima and they told you $40k would you give up on maxima's? or would you shop around.. |
this is not the kind of modification that i see a mechanic wanting to do. I'm sure no mechanics have ever done it before, and it's probably not worth their time. It seems too much of a headache (if i owned a car shop, that's how i would see it).

CBR2 lives in jacksonville, where I was born and VERY familier with. I live about 2 hours from him. Me, my dad, and a friend with a 5spd max would all go up there one weekend and do the conversion. Total cost ? +$500-800 for a tranny/parts +$400-600 for CBR2 -$650 +/- a lil' for my auto tranny/parts/pedals ______ AROUND 500 bucks. Not to mention the Experiance i'd gain, that great feeling i'd get b/c I was a part of it, ect ect.... Yup it's sweet livin' by Cbr2 :D |
Believe me, I would like to do it but.....
I have called 15 shops and they all gave the same lame excuse. I am assuming the $500.00 for the manual tranny is from a junk yard because several shops told me the tranny would be $1200.00 to $1500.00 with warranty and of course they mentioned this was less than half what a dealer would charge.
It's either have the vehicle you really enjoy in 5speed or have a fun car to drive that is lacking a little personality (AUTO) and a second car that is not quite as powerful as the VQ but more fun. 300zx I think it was 165hp. Getting a second car would keep the miles down on the Max. If I could get it done for the dollar amount you guys are saying I would get started this weekend. |
Why not just get a high-stall TC and the valve body mod? That right there should put you in 5spd range and you'd only spend what....like maybe a grand or so? But if it's the thrill of a 5spd you want, it's conversion time.:) Autos can be made just as quick though. ;)

6000$ hahahaha,
I was quoted 4500$ish locally to have it done, mechanics hate this job cause they have never done it before... dont ask random people, they are all idiots.. either do it yourself or someone who knows EXACTLY whats going on btw, you can get 5spd tranny's all day long for 500$.... w/ 30-90day warranties... In my opinion, it was sooooo worth it.. I would do it even if it cost me 1500$ it would have been worth it. |
hlh0501 would you or CBR2 be interested in doing the conversion.............
I could make the trip to TN or to Jacksonville. I am in Atlanta?
If so email me @ hudsonhome@att.net I am very interested. Thanks, Pat |
Re: hlh0501 would you or CBR2 be interested in doing the conversion.............
I am curious as to how good this conversion can truly be?? I really only know that the tranny is the difference when it come to auto/stick (of course all of the things along the way), that is the only part you really list, besides clutch, shifter, blah blah...
Are they any problems when converting from an auto to a stick? Because everything about the car is built to be an automatic and then it is being reversed to be a manual, I have a lot of interest in this an I am in Jacksonville.. some one provide some details.. |

Because everything about the car is built to be an automatic and then it is being reversed to be a manual, I have a lot of interest in this an I am in Jacksonville.. some one provide some details.. 2nd of all, in my opinion, it is muuch more fun to drive a manual.. MUCH more fun. everything in the maxima is setup for auto or 5spd.... even the holes for the pedals are drilled through for you and threaded... there is only 1 thing you have to permanently change in your car - you must drill a hole in your firewall large enough (its already laid out on there, with a little punch out cover...) for the master cylinder for the clutch. The only other problem you might have (We are still testing) is the ecu.. automatic drives it perfectly (some would say the car is faster on auto ecu.. PLEASE no one flame me- I'll post proof once I get it..) buuut I accidentally hit my "O/D" button on my automatic shifter, once we had switched the trannies ( we started the car to make sure it would start with the 5spd before swapping the shifter and everything.. it did) .. when I hit that button, I triggered my "Check Engine" light, and now it comes on.. CBR2 has some ideas of how to get rid of it, but I am at college and dont have my garage for another 9 days till I go home.. I am hoping ot run at the track when I go home on both ecu's also.. but that is a hope. oh well, did I type enough hehe... between the new speed, and the new fun... I undoubtedly think it was worth it. I even have the riceboys asking me now about converting their civics (hondas are waay easier to swap trannies) and I am like, "Uh I would except people would associate me with rice..." hehe :D |

with all this conversion talk i have been thinking, how expensive and how feasible would it be to covert to a 5spdauto or a AutoStick(clutchless shifter). Would converting 5sd to auto be just as much as auto to 5spd???

What the hell did you just say ?

Damn! I was just throwing out an idea, you ain't gotta get all rude, i don't know too much about these conversions just wanted to find out some info...sorry if I was unclear, wanted to know the cost and ease for other transmission conversions.

What about going to 6 speed?
What about changing to a 2002 6speed. Would there be a big difference as far as performance? Is so what? Any idea what it would go for? I imagine it would be a good amount because there are not many out yet never mind a junkyard or something. I already have a 5speed so would going to the 6speed be that much easier? Also how does it change shifting now? I mean do the gears have to be shifted at lower speeds?

wow, this is a funny thread. My how things have changed. More people have done the conversion and successfully. I personally would never go to a shop to do this. First off, every shop in my area won't even try to do it because they say it will totally f*ck up my whole car since my car was built for auto and can't handle manual. No one can say if this is tru or not but everyone that has done conversion on this board has not had any major problems besides burnt clutches and leakage which is either the drivers fault or something too small to even count.
As far as price is concerned, now people are getting trannies for like 300 and i have found some for 500 to 800 MAX...this is with 50 to 60,000 miles. Clutch and all other parts, if you look hard on this board, you can get good prices so i say MAX 1100 on all parts and that's if you don't search, and that's wit an AFTERMARKET clutch (ACT perferably)....labor, well, i found someone around my area who has done it to their car already. Better someone with experience of doing it than some shop who is gonna charge you a arm, leg, kidney and child. 600 is around the price for labor, so we are talking 1700 max! for conversion. And that's if you get one of best clutches out, you get cylinders brand new and you get expensive trans. I'm definitely doing this if my financing credit card comes through. |
yeah, i got a quote for 4000, and othere said it wouldnt be worth it, and would screw up my car. BUT, Mr Cranman lives here and is willing to do it for me. its funny but were like the only 2 New Mexico Members, and hes willing to do it. BTW, HLH, where could you find a manual tranny for ~500 w/ warranty?

Wow this post has brought back from the dead
Two months after this post I traded in the 96SE Auto for a 97SE 5speed and I have not looked back.

Re: Re: Ain't that the truth
the thing i like is when i race someone and after i spank em they go hey is that a 5-speed? and i say nah man its an auto and give em a smile =) but if i had the money i would do 5-speed in a heart beat
|
yeah, i like that feeling too, when you say you're auto when you've won, but when you get your arse handed to you, that's when you use it as an excuse:gapteeth:

auto vs manual
With a manual u can cherp the tire from 1st to second and you have way more control over the engine, and im still an auto driver. But i miss manual.
