Tint Laws/ license plate covers?
 

Hey, I live in CT and i got pulled over because i have a smoked license plate visor. He told me it was illegal and let me off with a written warning, but does anyone actually knows the laws on the tint issues? Cops on my campus pull ppl over for anything just as an excuse to check warrants and drunk driving, can i put my covers back on or should i leave them off?
I bought it at auto zone and its just a cheap bug visor thats slightly smoked, is that really illegal?
also does anyone know what the window tint laws for the new england area are, i was thinking of getting my windows done too.

the lisence shield kinda looks like this but alittle lighter. its not made to block radar or anything

Go to your state's RMV website and go through the laws. I believe they should be visible up to 60 feet away. And why would you want a "cheap bug visor" on our license plate anyway?

And it would be laser you'd be potentially blocking not radar.

I got bagged for the same thing a few years ago, a smoked plate cover. Im in NYC and as far as I know, anything such as a frame, cover, etc. which restricts the view of your plate justifies cops pulling you over. There actually is a law in the books confirming this. Just know this, if your riding dirty, the last thing you want is to get stopped for a stupid cover!

yea i got pulled over twice for the covers cop told me the reason they dont want you to have em is cause it makes it harder for them to see at night.

I got a ticket for a clear license plate cover. They are illegal, and who really cares about the plate anyway, not worth the hassle.

yea you really got a know this stuff. anything that is somewhat disorienting to the license plate is gonna catch the cops eye. As for tint, in Maryland anything below 30 % is illegal. CT is prolly same. for example a 20 % is almost blacked out. 0% obviously being no visibility. Id go 30 if you wanna play it safe, or 20 -25 for looks. your choice

Put smoked covers on when I got the car, had 1 cop tell me to take them off. Pulled them off for the winter, then back on in summer. Have done this for a few years now. They are illegal, but have some how avoided any other issues.

The license plate covers are the easiest way to get a traffic stop in VA as well

Covers here in Albany, NY are illegal as well. I got stopped for a blue one.

Anything that covers the license plate is illegal.

I live in CT, I go to school at Central. I got pulled over after about 2-3 years for tint. I had 20% all around.

The covers are most likely going to stay illegal because of all the red light cameras and electronic toll roads. A slightly curved cover might cause enough distortion when the flash from the cameras hit them that they cannot be read.

^ I got pulled over for an illegal left turn (new sign) and the cop told me "Oh, yeah... Your license plate cover is illegal." I was like, "Huh? Seriously?" It's funny that plate covers are illegal, yet people keep them in back windows behind 5% tint all the time, and even then they aren't sitting against the window.

Here in Texas the license plate cover can not obstruct the visual identification of the state name nor the wording on the bottom border of the plate! (The Lone Star State)! Also spraying your plates here with any kind of photo image distortion paint can be a big problem too...

In IL, covers are illegal and no tint whatsoever on the front windows or windsheild.

License plate covers are illegal in Ohio. No tint on front windshield any lower than the ANSI line.

I had really dark license plate covers on my black 5th gen and never had a problem with them... and I had been pulled over a few times for other reasons and the officers never made a comment about them.

regardless if they are legal or not, they are immoral.... what better way to advertise that you intend to break traffic laws, than to obsure your license plate so it's harder for a cop to write down your tag number if he catches you making a moving violation......

mythbusters did a show on that, it was a myth. the camera can still read it.

even the dark ones? or did they just test curved clear ones? and then there's people with really old ones that have yellowed over and become hazy...

I do not see any problem with a license place covers, but if it is illegal you better get it off. so the cops do not cause you trouble.

I agree with tosheto - don't give them a reason!

I don't think that they tested the really dark ones...
