Why didn't I think of that? ... Why we pay Nissan $30k

I came across this today: http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-P...n&RS=AN/nissan

It's a grommet that connects the trunklid to the body using an expandable, contractable flex section. I'm sure every 1 of us have thought about this at 1 time, when we opened our trunks... Leave it up to Nissan to put a patent on it. Glad Nissan's on our side!

Anyways, I can see a patent for one of these for doors too. If you search for Nissan patents, they've got some cool stuff lined up. Of interest to me are the CVT technology, lane departure stuff, and cruise control sensors.

So Nissan put a patent on their design.

Similar setup's have been in use by high end auto makers such as BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, Bently's ect. for quite some time now.

Yeah I was trying to figure out how their design was significantly different from what I've seen in other luxury cars... not sure where the difference is, but it was enough that USPO granted the patent.

um ok, but who can explain to me why this is so good? and what really stops someone else from making something similar? does nissan rent competitors cars and sue them? they don't mention this feature at all to sell cars that i know of

but seriously i want to know the benefit of this?

I don't get what this is. Can someone post a picture?
