$300/rim or for the set?

stock SE 17 x7 rim including tire is 51 lbs ... my volks 18 x 8.5 including tire are tops 40 lbs .. the rim is supposed to be about 17-19 lbs & I'm imagining the tire is another 20 or so lbs ...

yes but 18's, no matter how light they are, still have a greater rotation for the engine to do, so in that instance the 17's are always better.

You guys are clearly underestimating the weight of low profile tires. Low profile tires have extra belts and very thick sidewalls. A 17-18" low profile tire will weigh in around 26-28lbs. Taken straight off my Tire Rack shipping slip, a Sumitomo HTR ZII 235/45R17 weighs in at a whopping 28lbs. My Yokohama Avid V4s 215/55R16 weighed in at 26lbs.

My rim and tire together weigh 39 lbs. i was thinking 16 for the rims and 23 for the tires. Not to bad if you ask me.:)
