Wheel size: What is too big?

Seeing some of the Maxima's come with 19's kind of blows my mind.

I'm from PA and the roads around here aren't roads, they're minefields.

So, what do you guys ride with, and what wheel size is too big ? It seems like anything over an 18 is a pain.

tosheto 03-19-2014 10:41 AM

What year is your car? 2013 maxima probably comes with 19s, but I doubt 93 maxima came with 19s. I would go with couple sizes larger than stock if you want to maintain ride quality. But you can put larger wheels if you really wanted. I have seen 4th gens with 20s and 22s. Looks ugly, rides like sh*t, but people think they are very cool with their big, chrome, solid wheels.

TommyNtama 03-19-2014 03:32 PM

Well I didn't mean me, but seeing how some of these cars come stock with 19's, I can't imagine that'd be a comfortable ride !

djfrestyl 03-21-2014 01:33 PM

Not necessarily. Newer cars have larger wheel wells and can support tires large enough to provide adequate comfort. It's more than just wheel size should be considered.

Yup, and with that said, it depends on what year you're (the OP) asking about.

on the gen 5.5, anything bigger than 20" is pushing

I have 22 inch wheels on mine the problems I had with the stock wheels on wear and the suspension all went away when I upgraded to this wheel size. I also try to avoid driving in the city as much as possible only stay on the highway that eliminates 90% of the pothole worry.

Can't even imagine driving on those. Do you ever feel like it's not worth it?

Chris Alexander 03-23-2014 11:56 AM

TommyNtama you're not gonna believe this on the large wheels the ride quality when you move thru the city is very refined. very slick smooth feel it glides. My aunt has an 07 E350 Mercedes her and her new husband think mine has a smoother ride. It wasn't that smooth with the stock 17inch wheels it was just average. Rough roads you just drive slow its not as bad as it seems.

george__ 03-23-2014 11:57 AM

TOO much of a BLING factor

Tires make a hell of a difference. They are attributing more to ride comfort than you are letting on. The potenzas on the stock Maxima wheels are not comfortable.

djfrestyl 03-23-2014 12:11 PM

This video depicts nothing related to ride quality.

Chris Alexander 03-23-2014 12:14 PM

djfrestyl with the stocks for some reason my alignment was always an issue and then the tires wore uneven frequently haven't had a problem since the larger wheels fuel economy is decent 25-28 on the highway. I've seen 33 on the display screen on longer trips but i'm not sure if that's accurate.

to each his own everybody has their own style these work for me might not be for you or vice versa but I know what you're saying.

Chris Alexander 03-23-2014 12:20 PM

george__ hahaha yeah man they do attract unwanted attention a pothole is a low profile wheels worst enemy.

I used to live in PA and compared to Indiana... YOU AINT SEEN NOTHIN' hahah

King_Ten_Ahead I've seen the smoothest roads in Dallas Los Angeles was pretty bad in some parts. In San Antonio where i'm from its usually not the roads but people's junk and tire pieces laying on the highway I dodged a mattress last night.

MaxMike93 03-23-2014 02:42 PM

I have 17s on my I30 and I don't think I'll change them anytime soon since I like the ride and they look about the right size for an A33. My dad's GMC Sierra has 22" wheels and the Z71 off road suspension and the ride was pretty bad compared to my car. Seems like bumps that would normally just be absorbed got transmitted and would jolt the truck.

no $hit, really???? i have 17"s and with the craptastic road repairs ( you know they suck ) i'm afraid to put nice wheels on maxy.

Chris Alexander 03-23-2014 07:11 PM

The 6th gen is kind of a big car the stock 17s gave me a mushy ride feel and handling. The 22inch wheels give a getter ride/handling comfort its more balanced.
