I think we need to define the meaning of the word "crank" as it applies to automobiles here in the United States. To crank the car means to use the starter to make the internal parts rotate. If everything is in good working order, then the engine will "start" or "run" and you will be able to drive the car.

The Nissan NATS/NVIS security system is built around the ignition key having a RFID chip in the ignition key. Each key that you would like to use in order to start the car must be programmed into the car's main computer, referred to as the ECU or ECM.

When the red led in with the clock is blinking, then the computer does not recognize the RFID chip in the ignition key. The starter will "crank" the engine, but the engine will not start because the NATS/NVIS system turns off the fuel injectors.

The codes P16xx indicate a problem in this area. It could be the chip in the key or it could be a problem with the antenna module in the steering column. There is no published troubleshooting procedure because it would aid car thieves.

One thing you can try is to take your ignition key off of your key ring and see if the car will start and run. If this doesn't help, then you will need to have the looked at by someone with the CONSULT diagnostic tool.
