y-pipe - what's the worst that can happen
 

...if you fail inspection and/or the person sees that you have an illegal y-pipe? can they make you pay a fine? also if you fail, do you have to pay for the inspection when you come back again?

I know in NYC I don't think you have to pay a fine. But you have to pay for inspection ergardless you pass/fail. I put my Y-pipe on like a month ago, I'm do for inspection in Sept. usually on brand new cars they take it easy on the inspection. Anways, remember to drive your car around for a good 15min+ before inspection. But anyways I have a buddy that works at a shop who said just stop by and he'll pass me :D

I think 9/10 places wont know why you failed just that you did. I doubt they know what they are looking for when they look up at your enigine. I do know that they will look to make sure you have a Cat though.

do a search for people who have failed emmissions because of a y-pipe - you won't find many. The moral of the story is warm up your car before you get it inspected, don't go to a nissan dealer, and if you fail then just go somewhere else and they will pass you because how many mechanics really know what a stock y-pipe looks like

ok so they don't have the authority to fine me if they actually did know my precats were missing? just trying to cover my a** :D

I think that IF anyone checked under the car, they'd be checking for a cat and not necessary a set of pre-cats. I don't think that all cars have a cat and a set of pre-cats like we do... As for what can happen, someone posted last week or so about the Clean Air Act law or something and I think that spelled out what the penalties might be.

last time I went to have my emissions done, they were just entranced that I had a 5 speed in my car. I think I could've failed and still passed. I don't think you have to be a mechanic to work at the state emissions house.

Those guys won't know the difference between a stock and aftermarket y-pipe if they happened to look under the car. I'm worried more about my PR CAI then my y-pipe. Ugh....

NO worries what-so-ever about the CAI.

I passed my NY inspection with Y and CAI just last month.

They didn' say anything to you about it when they popped the hood for the visual inspection? Lucky you. I live in CA so I think I will have to choose my smog shop carefully (whoever's willing to let it slide).

i just got my y-pipe put on yesterday and right after i got the pipe on i did my inspection there. i told the guy i need to ride around for a bit or i will fail. he told me it should not be a problem so i let the car idle for awhile, and did the inspection. the guy knew i had the pipe. i was nervous that i would fail. the result was i passed with flying colors. the guy said my car was really clean burning.. this was in NYC..

whats wrong with a CAI?

make sure your car is warmed up before you take the test and you wont have to worry about failing

That doesn't sound right. Any intake upgrade from stock will make your car run better and more efficiently, because you're only giving the car more air. They will not make your car dirtier, so top speak. I don't understand why California regulators would be against that.

As for Y pipe, and straight pipes, etc, your exhuast does get dirtier, so that's understandable for inspectors to look for.

I haven't really noticed, but what I meant by dirtier was more in terms higher NOx and other emissions. Only an inspection by the EPA could pick that up.

I understand that part, I was just noticing that the rear end of my car is always noticeably dirtier now that I have a Y pipe. I wasn't sure if it was just because during the winter the roads are dirtier or if it was the y pipe

Y-pipe should not cause more cosmetic damage, or did you say that you have a diesel I30t:goofy:

there is no damage, it just seems to be dirtier quicker than before, I assumed initially its just the 3 years carbon being blown out of the muffler.
Jason-I know that you don't know how it feels to drive in a real car so you must insist on making fun of mine-grand pa driver.

Mine is a styling car, hehe, and yes I do drive slow(sometimes) b/c I don't need anymore tickets
