When it comes out, 5 spd GXE should cost no more than 22K at the most. That's a steal. But I'll still be keeping my 98SE in the family because I'll be losing money when I sell it. It's got 78,000 miles but the engine is silky smooth and there are no vibrations at all. VQ's are just amazing.

The 3.5L will most likely be an option on the Max. And the base price might be $22k, for all we know. So get rid of those VQ35 @$22k dreams.:Dlol

look at the Pathfinder for example the 3.5 is on the base model too.Hopefully the Max get's the 3.5 next year I think it most likely will though,If you think about it the 3.5 should not cost Nissan much more if any more to produce{all it is,is a boared out 3.0},if they make it on all models it would reduce the price of the 3.5 engine,so what I mean is it would cost Nissan a lot more to make both engines then just to make the one there for if they make just the 3.5 and not the 3.0 {like Pathfinder}they would save mony.

I highly doubt the VQ30DE or VQ35DE producing 260hp+ will be standard.

As the Maxima SE-R is supposedly planned for model year 2002, I would expect that engine as the SE-R engine and the current 222hp VQ being standard. Actually, I hope it's a 260~280hp VQ30DE instead of a VQ35DE, simply because then I can dream about Nissan VVL instead of just more displacement.... :)

Aren't they putting the VQ30DE in the next Altima? Thats what I heard through my dealership....that thing would fly since its sooo lite!!!

the Altima/Maxima thing is sort of unknown. Supposedly the Altima grows up and the Maxima gets bigger (Avalon size)...

I dunno though. I'm not worried about that, I just want my VQ!!!!

The 3L VQ will be offered as an option in the Altima, so Nissan will still be making it. Because of that, it's not going to hurt them to make the 3.5L an option. Besides, isn't 260+hp a little much on a standard Max? There's ppl who will buy them and they won't know what to do with all that power!:laugh:

Now I'm about to go on a little OT rant...
I wish the 3.5L could be standard, though. The cool thing about the Nissans was that most of them had perfect chassis/engine optimization. They won't have it anymore with these more powerful engines being an option.
Take for example, the BMW 3-series. It's a great car and everything, but the chassis can't be perfectly designed for all of those engines. Think about it: There's now 4 different engines available(2.5, 2.8, 3.0 and 3.4LM3), and that's just in the US! In Europe, they've got at least two diesel engines on top of that. Unless the chassis was designed specifically for the M3 powerplant, it's not going to be strong enough for all those engines. That can not only affect handling, but also safety.
So imho, Nissan had a nice thing going, but it'll be gone soon enough. But when you think about the great engines, it's kinda worth it.:D

Nissan was in dip**** and still is after merging with Renault. Nissan has a goal in mind. The goal is to make each model the most powerful in its class. If not the top of all, atleast on top of Toyo and Honduh. You think the accord and camry will use there 3.0 V-6s forever and never update it or add more power?

So having said that, yes the Maxima will get a bigger/more powerful engine, but maybe it doesn't come with a manual tranny. The altima will prolly get the 3.0 V6 standard or as an option.

ugh.. i think the new Z actually will have less power than Maxima, at NY autoshow beginning of the year, they said Z will be powered by NA V6 ~200hp, for under $30k. so it's not a wolf like the last gen turbo ones.
