what's the sweetest manual tranny you've ever used?

For me, I'd say the Porsche 944 Turbo. That car was an 86. I have not driven the new Carerra, but I'd suspect it's along those lines. The older Carerra was like a VW bug's shift IMHO. The 944 was actually fairly long throws but silky, not notchy. The 928S4 was notchy to me.

The BMW 528i is nothing special IMHO. the 2002 Altima isn't bad (only drove the 4-cyl). Audi A4 (prev gen) is also nothing special though that could be my next car. Mustang GT was weird the whole shift was slanted to the left.

My Maxima is not bad, but it drives me crazy when it clunks into 2nd when cold. Don't tell me I need a new clutch, PLEASE!! It also wont always go into R without stepping on the clutch once and then putting it in.

Integra GSR. Very smooth and very short shifting. Almost every magazine has praised Honda on their transmissions.

i would agree with the integra one for sure
you guys will know that your choices are nothing compared to the integra, although you guys listed more expensive cars.
i ve driven all of them, except for the porsches.....
i luv the integra transmission
but not all honda tranny's are good...
the eg civic one sucked...

maximaracer28 Apr 12, 2002 04:36 PM

Im curious how it feels to shift the new si, with the shifter right in the middle of the dash?

Shoooot, I gotta try that RS-X in 6. Do you fellas think that will mean the CL Type S will also be really good in a manual?

That Rally shifter style would probably take some gettin used to. :D But it looks kinda sweet.

Hell yeah. I loved shifting my Integra. The new RSX-S is really sweet too. I test drove one before I chose the Maxima. The RSX-S' shifter was even better than the Integra's, IMHO.

Smoothest: VW Jetta 1.8T

Quickest response (and shortest throws) : Mazda Miata

RKS Apr 12, 2002 06:44 PM

91 NSX short and easy almost self-guiding the car was an experience
96 VW Passat If I could take the gear box and handling of that car and put it on the Maxes I would be happy.

the best stick i ever drove was between a 2001 BMW 540 and this 2000 honda prelude...both were real sweet packed wit great power...was driving these during my valet parking days and never had to take it off first gear...lol...but i put it on second to be safe...and went around the block...i had a chance to drive this new porshe...i think it was the carrerra...the owner of this hotel had it....but this gay greedy friend of mine drove it into the lot and drove it out even though i asked him if i could drive it...DAMMIT...THIS CLOSE!! He said it has too much power

I agree with you on that choice. That tranmission is very sweet. It has a short throw and very crisp shifting.

Chinkzilla Apr 13, 2002 04:15 AM

dunno what the big deal about the RSX is, it's nice granted, but not THAT great. It feels a bit rubbery and loose if you ask me, throws are nice and short though.

Having said that, the absolute BEST manual tranny I've ever driven is my gf's 6 speed bug. It's the same tranny that's going to be standard for all vw/audi 6 speeds to come. It's in the GTI 337 edition, all the new TT's and probably the new S4. It is INCREDIBLY crisp, metallic feel with a slight notch to let you know youre in gear. Very defined gates and short yet smooth throws. The shift knob is also very cool. YOU CANNOT mis shift on this gearbox. The clutch is also dang nice, flex ankle, no moving knee or leg, thump in, thump out.

Imagine going from that back to my 6-speed max. Like rowing a boat :D

Honda S2000. By far...

dmontzsta Apr 13, 2002 11:31 AM

1993 GMC Sierra:laugh: J/K it would have to be the 2k2 6 speed I test drove, I know alot of you will disagree, but it just felt right to me.

Ben is right, I've had several chances to really drive my buddy's 2002 S2K, and the transmission is incredible! He had no idea, cuz it's his first manual tranny, so I had him drive Maxine... when we were done, he said "yeah, I like my car better"...

I suspect the RSX is *VERY* similar to the S2K.

Black97GLEnj Apr 13, 2002 12:44 PM

I've driven alot, but i'm not sure which is my favorite.
Ok here we go:
M3
M5
540
911 Carrera
Z3
Corvette Z06
RSX-S
A4, A6
VW 1.8T, VR6
S2000
prelude
Mustang 4.6GT, early 90's 5.0
Thats about all i can remember right now. My favorites were the M3 and the 911 Carrera. I have the opportunity to drive all kinds of cars cause I'm a valet at a Banquet Hall.

Ditto on the Hondas (in general) all the Honda sticks I've tried out or owned have been very nice to great. Even my old crock '82 Accord had a better overall feel than my Max now. Stiffer, but smoother with little notchiness, a little rubbery, but very smooth gates and mindlessly easy to shift.

The 2k2 6-speed is nice too IIRC....

Athough I hated the car, the S2000 had the best tranny.
