The Poorman's HAI...

1. Go out to Advanced AutoParts (or any other local auto parts store) and pick up a generic cone filter. The one used here is the APC Intimidator.

2. Remove the top portion of your airbox. I recommend you not remove the bottom as it can keep your intake from falling off (as many people have had problems with).

3. Carefully pry the brass plate located inside the top portion of your airbox out. It is held in by 4 screws in each corner (if you look carefully you can see the screwholes in this pic). This will serve as the adapter plate which you do not need to buy.

Vyrus May 26, 2002 04:41 PM

4. Attach the intake to the adapter plate and tighten it. Then attach the adapter plate to the rest of the intake tubing. Make sure the adapter plate is flush and you have not bent it in prying it off otherwise air will leak and you will have to buy a new one.

5. Place MAF sensor (previously plugged into airbox) anywhere in the intake system where it can get air. Then attach everything back together and tighten all the metal loops (braces).

6. Relax! You're done and all you bought was the cone filter.

I think this is the cheapest way imaginable. :D

nice write up and pics! but yeah the 3rd gen VE guys have been doing that for a while, I think Flyry was the first. be aware though, I've heard that brass piece that you mangled is a VERY expensive piece to replace!

jim90gxe May 26, 2002 05:34 PM

The 3rd genner's have been doing that for 5 years now :D

If you wanted to go back to stock, just use the same brass ring and put it back in the stock airbox. I didn't mangle mine so bad that I couldn't use it as it's original purpose.

wope May 26, 2002 08:43 PM

what kind of sound, if any, does this intake make?

It sounds and functions like any other pop / HAI - LOUD AND HIGH END!!!

All I can say is that it's an aggresive growl at mid throttle and a scream at WOT. My car sounds completely stock if I keep the revs below about 3000. Anything beyond that, it sounds loud. That's why I like it. Nobody knows until you stomp on the gas.

That's exactly what mine does - I love driving placidly with my friends and just when overtaking I slam on the gas an the intake growls so loud that they jerk their heads towards the right hand side of my engine bay. It sounds 100% stock under 2500 RPMS, but hit 4000 and it's a monster Civics won't want to mess with.

My fiance and I were cruising on the Interstate in her Highlander the other week and all of a sudden we hear a...

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH !!!!

...and I'm like, WTF was that?! The first thing I thought was that it was a Camaro SS with some sort of mod or something. I heard the noise again and looked down (we're in the Highlander) and it turned out to be a 4th Gen auto with an intake!

I had an intake on my Accord V6 and it behaved similarly. Very little extra noise below 3500rpm. After 3500rpm (VTEC engagement) and heavy throttle that sucker would turn some heads.

I'm sorta shying away from putting an intake on my Maxima. I think I like the quieter and more subtle power mood. Plus the short gearing in the 5spd and lots of highway miles might end up getting annoying. I was cruising at 95+ today (close to 4000rpm) getting on and off the gas for about 90 miles behind a BMW 525i and a Toyota Corolla  leading the way. If I had an intake I probably wouldn't have liked it and I do this type of driving a lot.

Exactly! Mine sounds pretty mean. Plus, I have stock exhaust. So, they don't know what they are messin with until it's too late and I'm at WOT. :evil laugh:

Yeah, my brother had this same intake in his '00 V6 Accord and it was too loud for him. It was louder than mine when that VTEC kicked in. He had to get rid of it and return back to stock.

does this 'ghetto intake' add any power or is it just sound? does it take away low end like a popcharger? (on an auto 4th gen)

It does add some 3-5hp mostly at high rpm's.

this mod is basically the same thing as a pop charger

It is a pop charger. Just a cheaper way of making one.

so it takes away low end on autos then?

Personally I don't think so... I got a 6.88 second 0-60MpH on the G-Tech, and others with CAI and stock have worse times.

last question...can you return it back to stock if you dont like it?

97GLE May 27, 2002 08:43 AM

How much is that air filter?

(I'm cheap:D)

Yes if you are careful when taking the brass adapter plate off. All you would need to do it put the plate back in, then reattach the airbox. It's very simple, but you have to make sure you are very careful with the brass adapter plate.

The particular one you see was $22.99 I believe. Like I said it is from the APC Intimidator series you can pick up at any Advanced AutoParts, but any generic 3" cone will work fine.

Dang, not one within 90 Miles of my house, o well ill look around, thanks.

got a question, how come brianV got tapes wraped around his intake & you don't if its the same thing?

I made sure my plate was flat and there was no air leaking, so I didn't need it. It all depends on how careful you are prying the plate off.

did you notice any low end lost? I know you said u got the 0-60 time, but what does it feel like between 0-3000 rpm?

wope May 27, 2002 07:45 PM

i did it today.. i had to use gasket maker to make a gasket because it would leak if it didnt. other than that it was easy and it sounds great.. took down an impala on the interstate when i was trying it out. its easier to get peoples attention when you floor it..lol

is your APC filter reusable Vyrus?

The APC cone filter is reusable. But, it does not already come charged or oiled from the factory. A good thing to do is buy a K&N charger and cleaner kit.

are all apc cone filter reusable? my friend got one APC cone & he said its not reusable

costcowholesale May 28, 2002 02:30 PM

also got another question, is that piece stuck in the stock air box with glue? if heating the airbox out gonna make it easier to pull out?

Yellowbrother May 28, 2002 06:33 PM

on my upper box there is an extra sensor there...do ya'll have this also...is so where did u relocate it to?

It can be placed anywhere in the intake piping... just stick in between any seam where it can get air and you will be fine.
