0104 error just went away!?

All by itself after about a week and a half to two weeks after it came on. It was vehicle speed sensor. Dealer said it was the speedo which always has, and still does work fine. The sensor checked out fine also.
Why would the check engine light go away by itself, when I tried everything including resetting the ECU before to turn it off? Will it come right back? replacing the guage for nothing, maybe for the sake of the light would have been $300.

I believe the ecu will show an error when it happens. Now if the ecu doesn't see another error code for about 50 turns of the ignition key, it will automatically delete the error code. So a few weeks is about right for 50 turns.
