IS it me or does the I30's handling really SUCK!!
Is it me or does the I30's handling really SUCK! I was driving the car the other day and the handling really sucks! Anytime I go over 75mph car does feel stable. Also during hard turning the car sways WAYYYY to much! I gues it because the soft ride the I30 has. What can I do to fix the handling? Also will it take way from the comfort ride the the I30 has?

FSTB & Rear Sway Bar... that would help a bit. Maybe it's also time to consider upgrading your suspension componets SY sycefiro@yahoo.com |
you need a stiff suspension setup which i will get as soon as my stock compontent need a change. then a fstb and rear sway bar.

Stock sucks BIG TIME... SE/touring helps but still sucks...
However, with a FSTB, RSB, stiff lowering springs, and stiff struts, that baby will handle like it is on rails... mine does :grinno: |
I don't know what you would expect from a 4 door luxury sedan that is not a BMW.
Sure the handleing ability can be increased but ride comfort will suffer. Even with the most forgiving set up, like H&R's with Tokico Illuminas, the ride will be stiffer. You don't list the year of your car anywhere, which I would suggest to do anytime you post, but it could just be a matter of your stock struts being old and worn out. I know when I replaced mine at 85K they were useless. |
Yea sorry my car is a 1996 and it has 70k on it! I don't expect bmw handling but hell my old SUV handled better then this, I was thinking that I am going to replace struts and shocks, The only thing is that I don't want the comfort of the ride to change because it is a every comfortable ride!
|
Well what do you expect when you have a M3 and S500? S50? Anywhoo, you really can't have both here. Better handling = slightly stiffer ride. Rear swaybar as others said would greatly help the handling while only minimally harshening the ride. Also it's cheap.

Like I said I don't want handling like an m3 because god knows there is no other car out there that handles like it but I want something where is feels a bit more glued to the road. I am thinking I need new shock because the car really handles bad it sways heavily and isn't stable at speeds above 75mph. I think the rear sway bar and a set of new performance shocks.
The last thing I want to do is take away from the great comfortable ride that it has. That was the Main reason why I bought a I30. By the way s50 isn't a s500 it is the motor code for the BMW M3 like the nissan has vq30de is such bmw has the s50 as it's motor code. |

ahhh hi.. im new to the org.. and yea... handling sucked with the stock suspension on my 98 i30... the T is a lil better..
but when time came to change hte shocks.. i changed up the struts and springs to stiffer ones.. ahh i forgot.. i think they were KYB... the lower end ones.. not the adjustable ones.. and springs.. and also added a FSTB.. and a rear sway bar.. the rear sway bar HELPED a whole lot.. and i have stock rims and tires.. and not nice ones.. there the older model rims... with the thin spokes.. but i found that instead of the factory 29psi of air.. i put it 35psi... which gives me much better control.. but im gonna put it back in the snow.. |
My car handels like a sports car! Eibachs and Illuminas all the way!
If you dont want too much of a change in ride I would suggest replacing your struts with higher-end shocks such as the Illuminas. I imagine it would make your car behave a lot better (not bounce around so much/ more stable at high speeds), but I doubt it would affect ride too much. |
i really think that with performance you tend to sacrifice comfort.. unless you get the adjustable struts.. and the air in ur tires makes a world of diff.. my car isnt that bad... the ride is okay.. but once i put in more air.. i feel everything.. but the handle is excellent.. i did the cuves on teh jackie robinson at 80-90s ....

Well if you get adjustable, you will not sacrifice comfort, seeing that you have 70k, you do need new struts! When put in my illuminas I drove on setting five to see what it felt like and it was harsh as hell. Dropped to setting 4 which was still harsh in front, so I switched to three in the front and kept 4 in the rear. That configuration also corrected the horrble amount of understeer with a stock set up. Because I used new bearings, bushings, and bumpstop boots, the ride, although stiffer was still superior in absobtion and comfort!
You can have both! Illuminas on setting 2 are supposed to the one of the most comfortable setups around! |
I like the softer ride, but I did add the RSB and FSTB for added handling.
