Dumb question #3.. Are Y-pipes Legal??

I'm looking into the Cattman or Budget Exhaust Y-pipe for my 2000 (3.0L). First of all, is this legal (I live in Florida)? if not, is anyone really gonna look under my car and write me up for it?

and more importantly, for all of you who use a y-pipe, have you had CEL problems associated with the pipe?

Thanks,
Kev

hehe. Springs will be here in 4 days.

y-pipe is illegal here in nj. I'm pretty sure it is also in florida. But no-one except a maxima owner will probably know that there are 2 precats before the actual cat. As long as you have the main one, even if they look under your car, they most likely won't know. However you might not pass emissions

You'll be fine. There should be no CEL and you should pass emissions. I've never had a problem with my y pipe and I just passed emissions last February with a y pipe and an after market cat.

Its only in California which has CARB emissions that a y pipe which removes the 2 pre cats is gonna cause problems. Remember, CARB is cali gayness in all its glory.

so which is the best? Cattman? or another company?

Thanks for the info so far.

Cattman is the best. Thats what I have. The quality of the welds are top notch, but it costs more.

A friend of mine bought one from one of the cheaper brands (warpspeed, budget, CE) and the welds were pretty sh!tty. They have held though.

I have seen some members have fittment issues with the budget brand.

I testify this to be true, have a friend that told me his car failed with y-pipe and passed with flying colors after he switched it back to stock

I've never heard of anyone in my area having their cars tested. We kinda live in a rural area, and I've heard if you live in St. Pete/Tampa area, their are Emission guidelines, but not here.

I'm the one with the CE Y-pipe. It is not quite as finished as the Cattman but is fully functional and I've had no problems. The welds on the Cattman are a little smoother but not enough to overway the cost difference. In performance benifit there is no difference. Unless you are creating a show car, save the money.

Also I have not had any problems with emmissions. I passed with 140000 and have a POP, Y-pipe, CE cat, B-pipe and with no problems. Don't worry about them looking and finding out tha you have the Y-pipe. They are such idiots. I had a 89 Toyota Cressida. I got emissions done on it twice. Each time they pulled it onto the front wheels for testing. I told them it is rear wheel drive. They would not believe me until they looked under the car. Mooooooorans

A little smoother? There is a BIG difference between the Cattman machine welds and the sloppy splattered sh!t welds on the CE. There might even be a tiny pin hole leak in there. I also don't see what a show car has to do with anything. The point is that the better the welds, the better the pipe is pieced together. The better the pipe is pieced together, the better it fits. There have been many guys on here that got a cheaper pipe and they had fittment issues because it was not welded together correctly. I'm talking about cutting notches out of the cross member just to get the pipe to fit.

Since you're at it, you missed 'emmissions' and 'overway'.

Alright, since everyone raves so much about Cattman, I think I'm just gonna save up and buy the whole setup for 1300 or w/e the price is, and then use what pieces I like combined together to get the best sound, then resell the other pieces I dont use. This is the link that really piqued my interest:

Again, as far as the entire system in place, maybe excluding the high-flow cat(keeping stock) will I have any probs with CEL coming on?

i30ds 09-01-2006 07:54 PM

To do the entire cattman headers y pipe and cat back package you will be looking at more like $1500. I would just spend the $600 on the standard cattman y pipe and b pipe and then a muffler of your choice.

No need to worry about a cel.
