"Nope, that's a Lincoln."

Anyone here have their i30 confused/compared to a Lincoln?

I'm on a road trip and don't have my tools, compressor, and other things with me so I'm at the mercy of other wrenchers when I'm in need.

Pulled into a repair shop (local version of Car-X) to have my tire pressure checked (anyone else have trouble with the OEM alloys not holding air?) and the guy said "sure, which car is it?"

"Black 4 door Infiniti over there."

"You mean the black Lincoln?"

me: "No, Pretty sure it's an Infiniti, that's what the emblem says at least."

him: "Nope. That's a Lincoln. Been turnin wrenches longer than you been alive, son. I know cars. and that there's a Lincoln."

me: "My mistake. Could you please check the tire pressure on whatever that black car is I've been driving?"

Now I've seen some mid-2000 Lincolns and have notice some similarities, mostly in the grille/headlight area, but is it REALLY close enough to confuse a seasoned mechanic?

SiathLinux Mar 17, 2010 04:19 PM

If a mechanic can't tell a Lincoln from a Nissan/Infiniti, then maybe he needs to retire or get his eyes checked.

96nismoSE Mar 17, 2010 07:08 PM

i dont think i would go to that mechanic anymore...

nsnrider Mar 17, 2010 07:24 PM

LOL

run.................

or more appropriately...drive away FAST.....LOL

MoncefA33 Mar 17, 2010 07:36 PM

Shoulda said...

"I've been literate longer than you've been 'turnin wrenches'"

a33i30 Mar 17, 2010 11:19 PM

I have the same problem with my stock 16s, they tend to lose air way too fast! and +1 ditch that mechanic.

Mr. Brett Mar 18, 2010 01:28 PM

First, I'd have made him a bet, walked him outside, shown him the owners manual, emblem, VIN, etc, and embarassed the hell out of him. And then taken his bet money. I don't see how a mechanic thinks he can argue with the owner of the car about its make/model...

Second, I'd tell the mechanic that I'm going elsewhere. If a mechanic can't tell one car make from another, and he's been wrenching "longer than you've been alive," I don't think he can justify working on any vehicle. :gotme:

Diamond Joe Mar 18, 2010 02:07 PM

OP, you're not alone. I've had my 99 I for 3 months now, and had a coworker rag on me for buying a lincoln (embarrassed him) and a jiffy lube guy say something about my lincoln. thats twice in 3 months, for those couting.

The front end (headlights, hood, grill) resembles the LS. (Which started production in 99, the last year of this style I30... hmmmm ;))

braindead5400 Mar 18, 2010 06:29 PM

That's pretty odd. So far I haven't had anyone confuse my car for something other than an Infiniti, not even a Nissan

Montego Murph Mar 18, 2010 08:43 PM

Lincoln LS -- exactly the one I think he meant. For the rest of that trip I made a point to check out Lincolns in parking lots, on the road, etc, and I do see a resemblance, however I'd think that a mechanic should be able to tell the difference.

Speaking of Lincolns... Anyone else notice that the rotating ad at the top of this conversation one for a Lincoln MKT SUV? Wonder if that's keyword generated or just a coincidence....

Yeah... this is no way a mechanic I'd use for ANYTHING, EVER. I just needed the tires checked, figured anyone could handle that. I'm starting to wonder if I stand corrected.

Col Ronson Mar 20, 2010 09:31 AM

what a moron i would have him explain the MFG BY NISSAN MOTOR sticker on the drivers side door. Who argues with the owner of a car the make of the car? effing idiot this guy needs to be slapped.

bing07 Mar 21, 2010 06:37 PM

a guy at a towing place thought my '00 i30 was a buick... that's why i switched my grille to the i35 one. :D

EsQueue Mar 22, 2010 02:17 PM

I think that this is the same mechanic that confused my i30 with a Dodge Challenger.

braindead5400 Mar 22, 2010 03:47 PM

What about the Mazda 626/Millenia? My friend started walking towards one before he realized it wasn't my car.

ZGadson Mar 25, 2010 08:11 PM

Be happy you're on a road trip. You'll never have to see the mechanic again.

If you're an 80 year old woman, I'd understand a mechanic having to tell you what you drive, but you're in a whole different ball game if the mechanic is arguing with you about the car you drive every single day. hahaha

btw - what city/state were you in?

Montego Murph Mar 25, 2010 11:08 PM

I was just outside of Lawton Oklahoma. I can't remember what the name of the shop was called, something like "Baxters" comes to mind but I know that's wrong. It was next door to someplace else I had to go so I chose it purely out of convenience.

I can understand the assumption that most people don't know crap about cars and treat them simply as appliances, but you'd think that someone anal enough to ask a mechanic to check the tire pressure and put 29 PSI in back and 32 PSI in front just might POSSIBLY be a car guy.

jrad4real Mar 26, 2010 02:53 PM

Shoulda popped the hood and said "Well how did this VQ motor get in here? WTF..."

ZGadson Mar 26, 2010 07:03 PM

i work for an insurance company and you will be suprised on how many guys walking and not knowing what their own make and model of their vehicle is. i honestly cant see how guys dont know at the very least what kinda car they drive.

on that note, i dont blame the mechanic on trying to correct you on the vehicle. but if the owner points out the obvious i would stop arguing right then and there...

5 ltr. beater May 5, 2010 05:20 PM

awww that's not soo bad being compared to a lincoln. people confuse my M for a Maxima. :wall:

ColombianMax May 20, 2010 10:23 AM

My 4th gen gets called a camry all the time. I got pulled over back in December and in the ticket the car is a 95 black toyota camry...

As for my 3rd gen... everyone thinks its a b13 Sentra and asks how my gas mileage on the 4 cylinder is so far... WTF

stamar May 20, 2010 10:52 AM

my car has been called a lexus twice.

similar to ls300

Mostly it is the color mine is, the light gold. Super common toyota color from their lexus to their camry. mettalic light gold.http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...0be277d2d2.jpg

aj99i30t Jun 17, 2010 06:55 AM

Hilarious - a Japanese Lincoln...

I've had problems as of late with my stock '99 "t" alloy wheels and slow leaks. The tire shop I deal with said it's caused by the alloy pitting in and around where the bead seals. I just got new wheels and plan on refinishing my stock wheels, when I have the time.....yeah right....

stamar Jun 18, 2010 02:13 PM

I got mine called a lincoln the other day in the parking lot.

I guess the mazda that looked like a i30 was the 929? It IS part lincoln.

I dont know but it looked pretty ford to me. Hugely rare to see a 929 anyway youll see way more i30s.

mazda had a stillborn program to make a luxury line and then had the millenia and the 929 to dump off as a result.

great used car values on those two models.

929 is sort of a peice of crap but the millenia is very exciting.

an i30 is a lot like a millenia but thats sort of backazzwards because an i30 is actually a common car but a millenia is so very rare.
nobody should be saying wtf is that it almost looks like a m Mazda millenia? Cause when is the last time youve seen one? Ive seen one or two my whole life.
Ya that is what it looks like though either a lexus or a mazda millenia or an acura something, asian euro model full size sedan.... yup all competing with eachother and being about the same thing

ig reilly Jun 18, 2010 02:27 PM

Yep. I've gotten Lexus, Lincoln and now Buick (!). I guess it's just that toothy chrome grille. Currently pursuing the I35 grille.

ForeverMAX Jun 25, 2010 10:59 PM

ah yes, I just got my 01 i30, my co worker goes " ooooo you got an Lincoln LS"
me: uh no!

im currently looking for i35 grill and the i35 sport/ q45 m45 18" rims

bigdaddydrt Jun 27, 2010 01:21 PM

I hope that mechanic was just yanking your chain. A Lincoln?? Seriously?

I was almost insulted the other day when a family friend looked @ my car and said, "so, how do you like the Sonota?" WTF???
If we were'nt standing about 75' away, I would have been pissed. But, seeing, (or not), as he is in his 60's and given the distance, I just said That's an Infiniti, not a Hyundai! "Oh that'd be much nicer than a Sonota." Nice save.

Col Ronson Jul 1, 2010 05:55 PM

i would rather push a nissan than drive a lincoln.

stamar Jul 2, 2010 01:31 AM

Only itd be way more likely to be the other way around.

Thats the point...

These lexus acura infinitis are trying to be like luxury cars that dont break down all the time.

dineth00i30 Jul 14, 2010 03:59 PM

Yes!!

Couple of weeks ago, one of my friend's sister asked me "You drive a Lincoln?" then my friend went "Na, its a Mazda". lol. So actually I got both of the Mazda and Lincoln. lol.

She is really cute and nice so I played it cool. :D
