I am a Car **** v2.0

I have been at it again.




Here is the new car, and I do believe she is a keeper.

1970 Ford LTD.

A little backstory if you will indulge me;


I posted my 89 mustang (see "I am a car ****") up on craigslist just as a feeler, you know, to see what else is out there. Eventually I get a text from an 18 year old offering me this car. After some chatting we decided that I had better talk to his parents to make sure they knew what their 18 year old was getting interested in, also to make sure that in his youthful ambition he wasn't doing something against his parent's wishes. I talked with his father who gave me the history of the car, turns out they are the 3rd owner, it has been in the family since bought new in 1970, granny bought it, and put 32k miles on it before developing glaucoma, and having her drivers license revoked. Eventually dads brother got his hands on it and decided that it was going to be a project for him. He did all kinds of engine work, but that is all, no exterior, no interior. He then sold it to his brother, (dad) who gave it to his son as his first car.


Backstory complete, son says that he is made fun of for; "driving an old person car," and he wants something sporty, and cool. Enter the mustang. I explained to dad that it was in nowhere near the level of the LTD and that it was a lopsided trade to say the least. I also explained to dad that a supercharged 5.0 mustang is not the best thing for a kid to be driving, it is unruly, fast, and expensive. After about an hour we decided that we would do the trade on the condition that I de-tune the car as much as I could, and that I include as much information as I can about the car for the son.


So I wrote a notebook full of everything I knew about the car, what websites to use, what forums to use...etc. I also put a new pulley on the supercharger (2.5 inch to a 3.25 inch) and set the engine advance back to stock. We did the trade, and dad and son seemed very excited to have my 'stang, and I couldn't be happier.


It is all original, with no rust as far as I can see, she has been up on a lift and her underside is clean.

That is the oem interior. There has not been any restoration done to the car as far as the interior is concerned.

It has a mild cam and lifters, edelbrock IM and carb, holley air filter and a complete exhaust.



So there is the new car, I doubt I will get anything anytime soon, this is a unicorn and I think we are gonna have a good old time together.

looks pretty sick, i grew up in a 70s Lincoln TownCar. all i remember is that thing was a big friggin tank lol

gonna keep her clean, except for obviously the rowdy engine.


it rides like a dream, it is longer than a chevy avalance, (I checked) and it cruises like nothing I have ever cruised. It is a TANK tho mang, its a 2 door coupe that seats 6...

That is a seriously nice find! Impeccable condition from the pics.

I am like some of the others though. I would start working to slam that thing to the ground on bags but that is just my style (too many truck shows I suppose lol).

Regardless of what you choose to do with the car it is very cool in my book

I don't do the slammed thing anymore.


I had a 240sx that was so low when I was working on the engine I could put my magnetic tray on the ground and reach it without straining THROUGH the engine bay.


My maxima has a 2.5 inch drop, not exactly practical


I really couldn't bring myself to even think about changing the stance, other than MAYBE putting rims on it, just for the purpose of keeping the oe rims and whitewall tires pristine for car shows n such.

Just finished doing a nice paint restoration on the car.

I think I did ok for my first ever full on paint restoration. First I washed her and while she was wet-ish I used mothers california gold clay bar set to get all the built up gunk off the car, using mothers california gold spray wax for the areas that dried before I got to them, lets just say that took a LONG time.


Then I applied megulars cutting compound to the car using a spongy microfiber applicator, working in very small sections, applying, then waiting for it to cloud, then using my 10 inch orbital buffer with a microfiber attachment to buff it off.

After the section I was working on had the cutting compound removed, I applied the Nu Finish using a clean foam applicator, and buffed it off with the orbital buffer.

I rinsed and repeated this process over the entire car.

can i be honest here my brotha, i liked it better the way it looked b4 you cleaned it. i just liked the patina in the paint and the old school look of it. how much did you get that old beauty for?? can i haz mre now you have moar trunk space??

prolly 18. It has a 20 gallon gas tank, I drove from altanta to columbus ga which (according to google maps) is 107 miles, on a quarter of a tank, so if you divide 5 gallons (a quarter of my tank) into 107 it is 21.4 highway, and closer to 18 city... so not bad actually. I prolly won't put 22's on it, will tint the windows tho, and........ what is BT????

thought you were a specialist!! blue tooth!!! i say paint it black and chromie's with 5% all around, and do the flames out the exhaust mod, so cool.

lol, I already got bluetooth radio in the car. Just got it installed today actually. Also got all my speakers installed (2 6's and 2 6x9's) Will post pics later tomorrow.

Not gonna paint it, I like the og paint, but I will get it clear coated, and have some of the grotesque old chrome and body stuff (the door guard down the sides for instance) taken off. Will tint, and add some nasty exhaust yeah, and I do like the flame out the back thing... we will have to see about that...

Just got the stereo put into the car, I must say that I am very VERY happy with it.


All the speakers are Rockford Fosgate, the headunit is crap, a dual, but it will do the trick until it breaks or something.


I am the happiest about the rear deck, there are 6x9's in the deck, but they are covered and hidden.



The 6's are mounted in fiberglass and really are quite well done (imho)

Bear with me here cause this is gonna be long, and pic heavy.



Over the winter I stripped the side molding off and removed the molding around the rear window.


This took A LOT of time (like 50+ hours)


So first I stripped the old crap off.

After getting all the molding off, which wasn't too tricky, I was faced with about 40 of these little babies:

They are just little metal pegs that hold all the trim on. One by one, I ground them down with my dremmel and then bondo'ed over the area until it was smooth. The end result was this:

Once ALL of those were done, the next job was taking of the rear window trim. It was a PITA! It was all held on by 40 year old screws with wingnuts that were too old and rusted to be of any use, it took some doing but I got the back stripped off too without damaging the bodywork.

Also, may I say that I don't know why they felt the need to use tar as a sealer... d*ck move.



So then it was on to bondo work.


This went on in several layers each building on the last, and each being sanded before the next was added...

Then it was off to paint.


The color is House of Kolor BC25. The sales rep called it "Piano Black." I had the entire car sprayed in this. Under the hood, the door jams, you know, an ENTIRE color change, not just a spray the outside and call it done job.

The c pillar bondo was about .5 cm thick. I did really thin coats so that I could avoid the porous problem. I took it to a body shop here in town and they said that there isn't really a way to do metal on metal in that seam...

I hadn't seen this thread before. Glad it popped up again.

Beautiful vintage Ford my friend but ... not knowing what your intent is restoration or resto-mod wise, as a Ford restorer myself I can tell you that the color change just pulled quite a bit of value out from under that thing. If I'm not mistaken, a black on green was not an offered color combo in '70.

Is it an XL model? if so, that's the last year for that trim.

Also, is it a "Cruise-O-Matic"?

The original paint code "P" Medium metallic Ivy was so faded that you couldn't even call it OG. I am resto-moding for sure bro. The engine is already a crate and has been modified, the exhaust has been modified, the interior has been restored, but it has a modern sound system, modern suspension, modern ignition, etc.. so I am not worried about a full restoration. I am glad you like it bro.
