2003 Polished Titanium 6speed!!

Hey guys like I said in my last build thread, I picked up a 2003 WV2 6-Speed HLSD Maxima on 8/24/15. I was itching to get back into another sweet sweet maxima and had to jump on it.
Got it for a steal but it did need some TLC. Lots of stuff needs to be done to this so stick along for the ride Pics of how it looked on the first day that it was delivered: Attachment 59966 Attachment 59967 Attachment 59968 Attachment 59969 Attachment 59970 Attachment 59971 Attachment 59972 |
Enjoy it those damn things freaking move.

So couple of issues with this car. Took a look underneath and noticed the oil pan was leaking a decent amount of oil, so I removed and replaced the RTV. F*cking hated scraping off the old rtv. In hindsight I should've just ordered a new oil pan.
Did an oil and filter change with 10w30 Castrol High Mileage and M1-108 filter. After I drained the oil out I was surprised to only find 1 3/4 quart came out. I do have a front valve cover leak which needs to be addressed as soon I can find a pair of 6th gen VC's. Replaced the bank 2 cam sensor which was causing my hard starts and now she fires right up. Also found a grille for the car so now it doesn't look as ugly. Now ill stfu and post some pics. Attachment 59955 Quick start up video after I replaced the cam sensor. No more embarrassing myself in front of the neighbors cranking the car for 15 seconds before it'll fire up. When I bought the car, it didn't have a radio in it and I luckily found one at the pick n pull for $23. So out went the single din adapter and in came the Bose. Excuse the dirt, its been cleaned off since. However I'm pretty underwhelmed with the Bose and can't use the cd player because of error f0. Anyway the cassete adapter and fm work just fine. Attachment 59956 Previous owner had ghey blue led's in the door panels so I swapped out those for white led bulbs. These iPhone pictures don't do them any justice, will get some better pics. Before: Attachment 59957 After: Attachment 59958 Ended up doing the rest of the car. The map lights have a 12 led panels and the dome light has 32 led panels I had laying around from when I had my 4th gen's. Before: Attachment 59959 After: Attachment 59960 Attachment 59961 Attachment 59962 |
You sure that's WV2? Might just be the lighting.
Clean ride though, even after all these years. |
i have the F0 on error on the bose also, and there is no info on that on here or the web. luckily cd's priorities are dwindling away as time goes on.
and nice work so far, keep it up! |
Also, as per the FSM, it states to use RTV for the lower oil pan. Seems not as satisfying so I opted out.
I had a slight leak with mine but went with a Fel-Pro gasket off of Amazon. |

So I've been busy with this car. I have a p0300 code for whatever reason and I figured I'd swap out the spark plugs and the 6 coil-packs. Also went ahead and put in 6th gen valve covers and gaskets for front and rear since they were leaking.
Taking off that intake manifold is no fun. So much easier on the 4th gens. Attachment 59915 Then I bent my front right wheel on a massive pothole.:bawling::bawling: Attachment 59916 Found a set of g35x sedan wheels on craigslist and ordered some Michelin Primacy tires to wrap them in. Attachment 59917 Also I needed to replace my rear passenger side mudflap since it was all cracked and broken. Luckily maximajoe was parting out a Polished Titanium and was able to pick one up from him. Before: Attachment 59918 After(Much Better): Attachment 59919 How she sits now Attachment 59920 |
Still have that damn p0300 though. Also found out my right rear caliper is frozen :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:
Im gonna gut my pre cats and see if that helps. Car is misfiring and is pretty gutless as of lately |
The calipers on my 5th gen froze like 2-3 times in the 160k miles I had on it. They are the worst.

OP in regards to your bose unit, look up how to do the AUX Hardwire into the OEM BOSE UNIT. DO IT! and continue loving your max even more. Simple, basic soldering skills and you'll have great quality sound into your OEM unit with stock system out of your ipod/iphone.

Well haven't been able to do much to this car due to time constraints but I swapped my old stock horns with the i35's that I have from my partout. Look below for sound clips

the problem is caliper design of the era with ebrake integrated into the unit itself. the fix, for e-brake issues is grease/lubircate the parking brake lines so water and debris can't get in and lock the e-brake, im sure it may help on the calipers it self too..

How much of a difference in sound would I have compared to the cassette adapter I have at the moment ?
im doin tape since day one, and its been fine. doing the soundproofing of the rear deck http://www.shiftice.com/bose_deck_fix.html has increased the quality tenfold, feels like the sub doubled in power , i def recoomend this, very cost effective. i also had to fix the relay on the sub amp (common issue as well) so with that and soudn proofing I am bumping |

Well I gutted my pre-cats this past weekend thinking it would clear up my p0300 but unfortunately its still there and the car is still missing quite badly at idle but drives great through the gears ??? Gutted front, rear, and main cat with the rear pre cat taking nearly 5 hours.
Attachment 59889 Attachment 59890 |
the rear precat labor ....- remove, gut, and reinstall was 5 hrs?

this is all in hindsight, but what tools did you use? i did mine in september and yes the rear precat was the worst but, still was only 30 mins with an 18" spade drill bit and decent drill

Used a little smaller spade bit and that thing just buckled. Essentially useless. The drill was my neighbors and it was an older makita that weighed in at roughly 15 pounds and we still had a really tough time. We ended up using a chisel and s 9 lb hammer to get it all out. Maybe your's was slightly more disintegrated which made it easier for you ?
the drill i used was newer and decent power...forget voltage tho. |
Some bad news, the motor is unfortunately toast. Did a compression test on the car and heres what I found.
150 150 140 90 90 90 This is why I've had the p0300 and the miss at idle. Its driving okay for now, burning a quart of 10w30 every 300 miles. The new plugs were pretty fouled up, which is also no good. Swapped in some 10w40 this past weekend to see if it helps some. Upside is, I have a spare motor in the i35 which will probably get swapped in once it gets warmer out. |

Thanks to Torque Pro, my trust ELM 327 and some wizardry with a 6 year old android phone ,I was able to pass NY State Inspections with a CEL and ABS light on.

So 2 weekends ago, I decided it was time to swap in this motor from the i35. Had a good friend come out from Rhode Island who basically did 99.9% of the swap. Thanks David!!! Here are some pics

Sweet!
Could you talk a bit more about what you did with Torque and ELM to pass inspection? Is there a way to make all the system monitors read as ready? |

No that would be super slick though. Just reset the CEL and drive around as soon as all the monitors are ready. The second that happened drove it to the shop and had it done. CEL came back on 2 mins after the fresh inspection was applied lol

I use the same app and I actually got it to clear the codes without clearing the drive cycle. I even cleared them just before I entered the testing facility. I see that you had a $22 test fee? Here in illinois it's free

So its been a while since I updated this post. Cars been running well after the swap. No issues other than some bs evap codes.
On another note, I made some window weld left and right motor mounts. (timing cover) Attachment 59640 (tranny mount) Attachment 59641 Next I ordered some truHart coilovers from ebay Attachment 59642 Heres how the car looked before any adjustments. Attachment 59643 Had to raise the car up some, and here is the end result Attachment 59644 While I had the car up in the air it was time for the cars first oil change after the swap. I had it filled with 5 quarts of SuperTech 5w30 and a SuperTech oil filter. After 2700 miles I drained 4 quarts. Decided to fill with Mobil 1 0w40 and Nissan oil filter. Replaced the drain plug and crush washer aswell Attachment 59645 Quick pic with a friend who helped adjust the coilovers. Attachment 59646 |

Also I decided to swap over the seats from my i35. Not sure what im doing with the i35 just yet have it up on craigslist hopefully someone buys it for parts.
But anyway heres some pics from the install Attachment 59636 Attachment 59637 Attachment 59638 Attachment 59639 Love the seats, much more supportive and plush than the leather in the Maxima |
You've done a great job getting this car back into shape!
|
Do those truhart coilovers ride well? I already got tein but I was considering those before.
