Update on the 97 Recall for the 2nd hand owner

I just called Nissan yesterday to check to see if my car is affected by the recall, they say they will know by 8/1, also I asked about the second hand owners, the lady told me that they should call and open a case/register with Nissan so they will have your correct address, so if they are affected by the recall, they will get the notice. So for all you second hand owner, call the 1-800-nissan1 to register your car.. remember to have your VIN handy!

Recall Info

I just found out about the recall today....Here's the info I got:

Vehicle: 1998 Nissan Maxima
Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
Campaign Number: 02V171000
Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:ALTERNATOR:REGULATOR:STARTER
Summary:

Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles. One of the diodes used in the alternator may have been damaged when built. This can eventually result in failure of the diode and an electrical short which could melt the plastic housing.

Got a question for anyone who wants to answer. I just had my alternator replaced because it died on me. Does anybody think that there is a way I can sweet talk Nissan into giving me a refund? I sure could use that money for something else. Has anybody experienced this on any of their other vehicles. For you slower folk, has anybody paid for something to get fixed out of their own pocket and then a couple weeks later a recall comes out for that exact item. Did you get a refund? Thanks.

When I was sttioned in Germany the fuel pump went out on my Sentra. I called Nissan and they not only paid for the service at the local German dealership but they sent me a new fuel pump. Granted this was in '94 but I was truly surprised they did it.
