Fun with Mustangs last night.

I went to the track last night to again have my dreams of 14's foiled. I was however cheered up by a couple of races with two Mustangs. First one was a newer 4.6 GT. He had a Saleen sticker on the window (obviously not one by the outcome!) and all kinds of graphics down the door, 289 GTS and stuff like that. I got up to the staging lanes and I was going to run with a buddy of mine who had his CRX there but I looked over and see the Mustang guy pointing at me as if to say "You and me, lets go." So I shrug and give him a thumbs up and we proceed to the start. I got off the line first (.56 R/T) but he jumped ahead by the 60 FT (1.9 for him I think). I caught up to him and inched ahead just barely in front of his front bumper. It was neck and neck the whole way. I slowly inched throughout the race until right at the end he started pulling. To little to late though, I got the win. He ran a 14.9? to my 15.17. I guess I over estimated those things. I thought he was going to eat me alive. He put his slicks on after that and I didn't see him around me anymore that night.

Second one was an old 5.0 who had all these stickers and big tach and louder than hell. I beat him by two or three car lengths.

I ran my 15.05 with stock intake manifold on. Now I have a VI and I can't even match my time!?!?! I think something's wrong with my car. I can't say the intake doesn't help because one one run my RPM switch reset itself and didn't open the valves, I got a 15.6 or 15.7 on that run. That was after 3 or 4 consistent runs at 15.1. So it does definitely help, but I think it's having to compensate for some other problem with my car. The wife is none to happy that I'm not in the 14's yet. I basically had to promise that I would be in order to get the VI. It's a never ending puzzle called "My Car Should Be Doing Better, But Why Isn't It?"

Travis-

Are you sure your VI is working? What were your trap speeds for the night? I wouldn't worry about it too much until the temps drop some. I ran last Wednesday night and got 2 14.9s, 2 15.1s, and 1 15.2 all with 2.3-2.4 60's. My car just runs like a pig in this hot humid weather. Seeing you're only 1.5 hours south, I can only assume the weather is the same down there. Start worrying about your car when you're running it in 50-60 degree weather and it still isn't getting 14s.

BTW, I ran two newer GTs (01 and a 02) on Wednesday. How's a 15.1@94 to his (02) 15.1@94mph sound? Or a 15.1@94 to his (01) 15.0@95mph. It was a slow night for everyone.

Correct me if Im wrong, but wouldnt that mean you lost to him? Meaning he got a quicker time?

On one run the RPM switch went on the fritz and I could tell right away it wasn't opening. It felt like I was letting off the gas compared to when it was working. That run was something like a 15.6@87 or something like that. 4 or 5 runs before that were around 15.1@90. So I have no doubt that it is working and it does help substantially. I don't want to have to wait till fall to get 14's.

I looked up the conditions for last Friday night in Joplin. It was in the 80s at night with 80%+ humidity and a weak 29.90 baropressure. Those aren't good conditions to be racing in. Keep in mind that I was running in similiar conditions on Wednesday night and I was running 14.9-15.2 which is damn close to what you're running in a AUTO WITH HEAVY 17s!!!!!!!!. That says a lot about the VI. Once it cools down, I think you'll be running 14.7s@93mph. Mark my word!!!

Re: Yes, it's working.

Try running on some light weight 15in wheels with 205/50-15 drag radials. That itself should get you well into the 14s. The VI + shorter auto gear makes a nice difference.

Hi, I was wondering what a 99 SE-L auto would get with a decent reaction time stock. Would any air filters drop that down, enough to make it worth the money?
Thanks,
Dan Raia
